Manchester United Football Club

All started in year 1878 when Manchester United Football Club was founded as Newton Heath LYR FC. This club was founded by railway workers at Newton Heath and first they played games against other rail companies. The first recorded match was on 20 Nov 1880 against Bolton Wanderers (reserve team) and they were defeated 6-0. On this match, Newton heath players were wearing green and gold colored shirts, which was the color of the railway company. Then in 1892 they started playing in the First Division. In this year they also become independent of the rail company.

On 24 April 1903, four local businessmen invested in the club because of the debts and for exchange they could run the club and because of them the name was changed to Manchester United. With new name, Manchester United Football Club started a successful era, which is still ongoing. In 1906 they finished second in the Second Division. Just two years later in 1908 they won the first First League title.

New season started with another trophy, this time it was the first ever Charity Shield. In the same year they also won the FA Cup.
Year 1934 was the worst in the history of Manchester United, because they finished in 20th position in Second Division which was all-time lowest position. Just a few years before the WW2 the club almost gone bankrupt but it was saved and then they could place in the First League again. Then in 1945 after the WW2 a new manager was appointed. It was Matt Busby who led Manchester United to the 2nd places in 1947 to 1949 and FA Cup victory in 1948. In 1952 they won the First Division title after 41 years. They also won the league in 1956 and 1957 with an average age of 22 years and that is also the reason that media labeled this winning side as "the Busby Babes".

In 1957 Manchester United played the first European Cup and they lost in semi-finals against Real Madrid. Manchester United was the first English team which had the opportunity of playing in European Cup. Then came the 1958 season... Manchester United was playing in Yugoslavia against Red Star Belgrade and they won.

On 6 February 1958 the plane with players and officials landed in Munich to refuel. And then.... When attempting to take off, the plane crashed.... The Munich air disaster claimed lives of eight Manchester United players and 15 other passengers.

But in the same year the club managed to reach the final of the FA Cup and they lost to Bolton. When Matt Busby fully recovered from his injuries, he started to rebuild the Manchester United team in the 1960s. They won two league title in 1965 and 1967. And then in 1968 they managed to be the first ever English football club to win the European Cup. They beated Benfica 4-1 in the final and for Manchester United were playing legends like Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law.

Next year Matt Busby resigned as Manchester United manager.
Between year 1969 and 1986 the changes occurred mainly in the managers. In that time six managers were changed including Matt Busby and they won just three FA Cups. Then the year 1986 came. Atkinson was dismissed and Alex Ferguson toke the hot seat at Old Trafford. In year to come Manchester United was finishing in 11th, 3rd and 11th place which was not satisfying for club owners but the 1990 FA Cup win saved Ferguson from dismissal. In the next season Manchester United claimed its first Cup Winners Cup after a 2-1 win against Barcelona.

They also beated European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Super Cup. In 1993 they won the first league title since 1967 and with a FA Cup win they complete the first Double. The season 1998-1999 was a dream for a Manchester United supporter. Manchester United is the first English team who won the FA Cup, Premier League and UEFA Champions League in the same year. The UEFA Champions League final was a very special and full of emotions game. It was all lost when it was just three minutes to play and Manchester United was loosing 1- 0 to Bayern Munich but the players weren't thinking like this. They played to the last second and they could score two goals for an incredible win. This game is considered as the greatest comeback of all time. Because the services to football, Ferguson was in same year knighted to Sir Alex Ferguson.

In that time they won Premier League in 2009 and 2011, League cup in 2009 and 2010, Community shield in 2010 and 2011. And I am proud to tell you that United achieved a record 19th Premier League title what means that Manchester United is the most successful football club in England.
