What This Interview With Brian Grasso Is All About

Talking with Brian is liking talking with a super cool College Psychology professor. It?s awesome! Psychology plays a HUGE role in figuring out what your clients want, need, and why they act they way they do.

The trend of economists functioning as detectives may ultimately be good for the profession

The first edition of The Undercover Economist sported a pulp-fiction private investigator on the cover. I?d suggested the image because, well, why not? Little did I realise I was anticipating a trend: the economist as detective.

It seems an unlikely development, given the fondness of economists for convenient simplifying assumptions. (Had Sherlock Holmes been an economist, he would surely have assumed that the Hound of the Baskervilles was a perfectly spherical dog moving in a frictionless environment.)

But whether the development seems unlikely or not, ?forensic economics? has arrived. A splendidly simple example was published in 1994. William Christie and Paul Schultz noticed that prices on the Nasdaq market, quoted in eighths of a dollar, actually varied by quarter-dollars. Quotes ending one-eighth, three-eighths, five-eighths and seven-eighths were rare. Christie and Schultz checked carefully before concluding that this was probably symptomatic of collusion between market-making investment banks, designed to keep bid-ask spreads plump. An investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, class-action lawsuits and out-of-court settlements all followed.

Other examples of forensic economics are more complex. A recent survey on forensic finance by Jay Ritter and a forthcoming one on forensic economics by Eric Zitzewitz jointly outline how forensic economics is evolving.

One approach is to use purely statistical analysis, the most famous example of which comes courtesy of Brian Jacob and Steve Levitt, who identified some improbable patterns in multiple-choice test results in some Chicago schools. These suspicious ?answer strings? (with all students giving the same response to clusters of questions) were correlated with sharp, temporary improvements in average scores.

Another approach is to use deviations from what an economic theory would predict. Zitzewitz found evidence of ?late trading? in mutual funds, which is illegal. He showed that trades were correlated with information the traders couldn?t legally have possessed and could not ? according to the efficient markets hypothesis ? have deduced. The suspicious patterns disappeared after an investigation was announced.

Field experiments are also increasingly popular as a way of revealing suspicious behaviour. Benjamin Olken studied corruption in road building in rural Indonesia, devising his own measures of how much construction material had been stolen and cross-checking them with an independent audit.

What emerges from forensic economics? Zitzewitz argues that a major theme is government failure: not just the failure of dysfunctional governments in poor countries, but the failure of police and regulatory authorities in the United States and other wealthy countries. Perhaps in these gloomy times that will not come as a huge shock.

It?s fair to ask why economists feel they are qualified to undertake this kind of analysis. They are a self-confident bunch and may not be inclined to ask such questions of themselves. But answers do exist.

Economics is unusual in requiring statistical sophistication plus the ability to think about man-made institutions and human motivations. And economists are naturally suspicious: rational economic man, after all, is smart and amoral, the kind of person you?d want to keep an eye on.

The forensic economics trend may be good for the economics profession, too. It requires economists not to spend too much time thinking about theory, but to pay close attention to data, and to the messy way in which markets actually work. These cannot be bad habits for economists to acquire.

The time will go by quickly and both your body and your yard will look great.

You should know how long that you should hold the stretch. Assuming that you are below the age of 40, you should hang on to every stretch at least 30 seconds. If you?re over 40, you need to hold each stretch for one minute. This can help you prevent muscle injuries.

One powerful motivation tool you can use in your fitness regimen is setting personal goals. This makes you want to beat each goal or record instead of being concerned about the difficulty to do so. Setting an ultimate goal also gives you something to reach for and keeps you from throwing in the towel. You picture yourself as the person you will be in the future.

When you are able, go outside to do your work. Think about doing something outside. Ride a bike, or jog on the beach. Getting outside while you exercise can improve your mood while you are improving your health. Simply being outside helps to lower stress. 3

Get back into your routine if you get back into it as soon as possible. If you only exercise the injured muscles a little, without putting too much strain on them, the muscles will actually heal faster. Carefully exercising injured muscles, promotes healing by increasing the essential blood and oxygen to the muscles that can be limited as a result of the injury.

A handy fitness trick is to press your tongue against the top of your mouth while you are doing crunches or situps. If you do this, it helps to keep your body in the right form. This aids you in avoiding any accidents, which may cause harm to you.

These tips will help you get started in a new fitness routine. You need to focus on making fitness a part of your daily routine, rather than just something you do once a week. If you get healthy and stay fit, you will be better equipped to handle life?s ups and downs.

>> yeah. that's the idea. they want to help people stay in their own homes but they cannot afford to pay the mortgage. what they're offering. this is a pilot program . it will be less than 1,000 people can't be offered this. you can't apply for it. they're saying if you trade in the deed to your home, they will offer you a rentback. a rental lease as if you were renting anybody else's home and you can stay in the home. eventually they will sell the home to an investor if this program works out, if they widen the program out. the biggest question is how many people will really want to do this. a lot of bad feeling about the bank foreclosing out. do you really want to rent back from the bank? in states like new york where the foreclosure time lines are really long, three years, a lot of folks have been sitting in their home without paying a mortgage payment for up to two or three years so why would they want to pay rent now? we spoke to some executives. they say this is a pilot program them want to get the answers to these questions.

>> how do people qualify for this if there are certain people throughout where their ears are perking up to a program like this. how tough will it be to qualify?

>> again, it will be an by invitation only program. i'll give you a couple. your bank has to be owned by bank of america . you have to be delinquent for more than 60 days and you have to have exhausted all tries to modify the home and alternatives like short sales. you have to have a high balance on your loan in relation to your current property value so you're at risk of foreclosure. no junior leans. you have to still be living in the home and you have to have adequate income to make that rental payment. if you meet all those, you're good to go if they ask you.

The Third Annual Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Film Festival is slated for April 12-15, 2012 in Hollywood, CA, and for the 2nd year in a row TCM is collaborating with D23, the official Disney Fan Club, to present two groundbreaking Disney films including: the 75th?Anniversary screening of Walt Disney?s first full-length animated motion picture Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and legendary film actor Kirk Douglas to introduce 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.? On Friday, April 13, at 2:45 p.m., Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas will be present at Grauman?s Chinese Theatre for the first public screening of the newly restored 1954 adventure film epic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the first live-action feature film shot at Walt Disney?s Burbank studios.? Disney recruited an A-list cast including Kirk Douglas, James Mason and Paul Lukas, and a set budget of $9 million, the largest in Hollywood history at that time.

Walt Disney had originally planned to turn Jules Verne?s tale of Captain Nemo?s battle to wipe out warfare into an animated feature.? But when he saw designer Harper Goff?s preliminary sketches, he decided to make the switch to live action.? To film the massive production ? the studio?s first in CinemaScope ? Disney added a water tank and a third soundstage to his studio, rented additional space from 20th Century-Fox and Universal, and sent cast and crew to the Caribbean for underwater shooting.? His technicians also had to develop new equipment for the film?s many underwater scenes and create a giant, two-ton squid for the film?s most impressive sequence.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?went on to earn two Oscars?, one for the eye-popping visual effects and one for John Meehan and Emile Kuri?s art direction and set decoration.? The film earned a third nomination for Elmo Williams? editing.

Operation Undersea, an episode of the Disneyland TV series highlighting the creation of the film, won Emmys? for Best Individual Program of the Year (1955) and Best Television Film Editing.

On Saturday, April 14, Walt Disney?s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?will screen at Grauman?s?Chinese Theatre at 1 p.m.? This film revolutionized the art of animation with its cutting edge technique, design and storytelling ? setting animation in pursuit of an ever more realistic look.? Moreover, it demonstrated animation?s viability as a legitimate cinematic art form.? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences bestowed a special Academy Award? on Walt Disney, recognizing Snow White as ?a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field.?? The unique Oscar? trophy consisted of one full-sized statuette standing next to seven miniature versions. The film also earned an Oscar? nomination for Leigh Harline?s memorable score.

Mitt Romney Calls For Repeal of Obamacare, Presents ... - Insurance

BOSTON, March 23 ? The presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., issued the following news release:

?Today Obamacare is two years old, but the American people are not celebrating, and neither is the White House.

We must repeal this law immediately.? ? Mitt Romney

Today in Metairie, Louisiana, Mitt Romney leveled harsh criticism against President Obama?s failed health care reform. ?It was always a liberal pipedream that a 2,700 page, multi-trillion dollar federal takeover could actually address the very serious problems we face with health care,? said Romney. ?Sadly, the law itself is fast becoming the national nightmare that I and other critics have always predicted.? Romney noted that, contrary to President Obama?s claims in promoting the law, costs are already exceeding projections, insurance premiums are expected to rise dramatically, millions of Americans are facing the loss of their health plans, and Medicare beneficiaries are bracing for substantial cuts.

Romney repeated his commitment to repeal Obamacare, and outlined his vision for a health care system guided by state flexibility, market competition, and consumer choice that will provide higher quality care at a lower cost to all Americans. ?Everyone can agree that health care is broken,? said Romney. ?So the last thing we should do is allow Obamacare to freeze the current system in place. Instead, we need to encourage innovation at every level. States should have the flexibility to pursue new policy approaches. Insurers and providers should have the opportunity to compete in a genuine market. Most importantly, patients should have the information and control they need to make choices about what they actually want.?

Romney also announced members of his Health Care Policy Advisory Group: Scott Atlas, Tom Barker, Scott Gottlieb, Paul Howard, and Tevi Troy. This group will help Romney design policies that will strengthen the health care system nationally while giving states the power to innovate and individuals the power to control their own health care decisions. ?I?m honored to have the support of this thoughtful and experienced group of advisors,? said Romney. ?I look forward to working with them to help deliver the health care system that the American people want.?

NJ.com- A college student in New Jersey will go to court to fight an allegation that he stole a cup of ice from the school cafeteria. Cedric Calero of Manalapan faces a disorderly person?s offense. The 18-year-old freshman at Brookdale Community College in Middletown tells the Asbury Park Press he had paid for an order of french fries but the cashier had walked away before he could ask for a cup. Calero says he took the cup, filled it with ice and sat down. A few minutes later, a manager accused the student of stealing. Calero assumed there was no charge for cups. College spokeswoman Avis McMillon says there is no sign showing that the cafeteria doesn?t give out or sell cups for ice. The court hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Community college gets a bad rap. Sure, it?s mostly high school burnouts or recent GED recipients taking classes with little to no rigor or educational value, but at least in the end they get a ?degree? so they can get a ?real? job. Plus I like the TV show. That being said, is it any wonder that people think community college is a breeding ground for stupidity when its run by people that press criminal charges for stealing a cup full of ice? What a clusterfuck of idiocy this is. Not only did the manager think a cup of ice was important enough to call the police, the police thought a cup of ice was important enough to press charges, and the higher ups at the college took one look at the situation and said ?Good job everyone!? You know what cost more than the ice and cup he stole? The electricity used to make the phone call to the paper saying ?There?s no sign saying they are free.? There?s no sign in my school?s bathroom saying toilet paper is free, but I still haven?t paid to take a shit. Keep doing your thing Brookdale Community College. America needs telemarketers.

Plot to free woman from death row is busted

A man and a guard who allegedly plotted to break out the country's youngest female death row inmate have been charged and arrested, the Tennessean reported.

Officials say that Donald Kohut, Jr., a 34-year-old personal trainer from New Jersey, struck up a relationship with Christa Gail Pike, 36, the only womanon Tennessee's death row, according to the state's department of correction. They wrote letters and Kohut visited Pike, who is incarcerated at the Tennessee Prison for Women, twice since July.

In January, authorities learned that Kohut, wanting more than the occasional, shackled face-to-face visit, sought to free Pike and had enlisted the help of a guard, Justin Heflin, 23.
