4. Rescue an animal. Chances are pretty good that you?ll consider yourself to be among the rescued too, once you fall for a pooch or kitty who craves your company. About a year and a half ago, writer Dick Pollak and his wife Diane Walsh, a pianist, decided to sublet their Upper West Side apartment and travel around the world. But first, Walsh had scheduled performances in California and Iowa?with a break in between.
?We had some time to kill in California,? Pollak, 78, explained. So in March of 2011, the couple signed up for a Road Scholar program called ?Magical Monterey.?
According to Pollak?s travel blog (You?re Only Old Once), the Monterey trip included ?about two dozen other graying travelers.? While staying at Hidden Valley, an arts center in Carmel Valley, Pollak and his fellow Road Scholars attended a winemaking lecture, musical performances, dance-inspired exercise classes, a Monterey Bay Aquarium field trip and a scenic bus trip along 17-Mile Drive, among other activities. ?It was a positive experience,? Pollak said.
Founded in 1975, the Boston-based nonprofit travel organization changed its name from Elderhostel to Road Scholar a little over two years ago. ?There was this misperception of what the programs were like,? explained Despina Gakopoulos, a spokesperson for the organization. The word ?hostel? gave people the mistaken impression that they?d be staying in sparse or dorm-like accommodations, she said. And not everyone wants to be associated with the word ?elder,? she added.
Originally, the organization offered programs on college and university campuses. While many Road Scholar trips continue to be associated with educational institutions, others are not. So while some participants (like Pollak and his wife) may find themselves bunking in a dorm, those on other trips may stay at a hotel or inn.
Every Road Scholar trip has an educational focus. ?We use local experts and instructors as opposed to a tour guide, so you really learn in depth about whatever topic or area you?re studying or visiting,? Gakopoulos said.
In 2011, more than 100,000 people attended Road Scholar programs around the globe, Gakopoulos said. The organization offers about 6,500 programs in 50 U.S. states and 150 countries. In the past, the age requirement for all programs used to be 55 and over. Road Scholar, however no longer has an age requirement for its programs.
Road Scholar?s U.S.-based programs average about $150 a day, while its international programs are about $288 a day (excluding airfare).
?Being a nonprofit, we try to keep the cost down as much as we can,? Gakopoulos said. The price of a program typically includes accommodations, lectures, activities, most meals (unless noted), taxes, gratuities and transportation within the program, as well as a travel assistance and insurance plan, she said.
For those who may perceive a Road Scholar program as financially out of reach, the nonprofit offers needs-based scholarships of up to $800 for its U.S. based programs, Gakopoulos said. Most U.S. programs tend to be about six days in length, while international ones are roughly 13 days.
Internationally, programs in Costa Rica, Italy, France and the United Kingdom tend to attract a lot of people, Gakopoulos said. More recently, Road Scholar started offering programs in Cuba, which have been ?phenomenally popular,? she said. ?We were granted a [people-to-people] license to operate programs there last year that was renewed again this year,? she explained. One eight-night trip named ?Cuba Today: People and Society? includes an intercultural exchange at a middle-class family home.
The Road Scholar website categorizes its programs by location as well as by interest. And every program has an activity level rating ranging from physically easy to challenging, Gakopoulos said. ?So people can choose what makes the most sense for them,? she added.
But it?s not just the educational activities that make Road Scholar Trips unique, Gakopoulos said. It is the sense of community created among people sharing the same interests, she added. When asked what he enjoyed most about the Monterey trip, Pollak spoke of a spirited conversation at dinner with a table of birders. ?They proved to be a quite interesting and very varied group from all over the country, and we had quite a jolly time,? he said. ?As I recall, we didn?t talk much about birds.?
Although Pollak and his wife typically ?don?t do organized groups,? he said they would be open to going on another Road Scholar trip in the future. ?The only negative was the rain?that?s hardly Road Scholar?s fault,? said Pollak.

People were not sure how they felt about the prequels, but the final movie that was released had the best reactions out of the three.
The Star Wars series ended up making the third most amount of money behind James Bond and Harry Potter. Altogether, the Star Wars series made almost $4.5 billion. Since this movie was so successful, some of the movies in the series have been rereleased in theatres.
In the beginning, Universal Studios agreed to make the movies Star Wars and American Graffiti in 1971. However, Star Wars did not end up being made that year. In 1973, George Lucas decided that he did not want to give up on his movie, and he wrote a short summary of the movie that he entitled The Journal of Whills. The short summary was difficult to understand, so George Lucas had to go back and write a 13-page treatment of the film. The world's Arctic ice?cap has shrunk to a new low, surpassing a record set only five years ago, and is expected to keep retreating for a few more weeks, according to U.S. data released on Monday.

The Arctic sea ice?fell to 1.58 million square miles, or 4.10 million square kilometers, down 27,000 square miles from 2007, the lowest since satellites began measuring the ice?in 1979, according to the?U.S. National Snow and Ice?Data Center.
"It's a little surprising to see the 2012 Arctic sea ice?extent in August dip below the record low 2007 sea ice?extent in September," said?Walt Meier, a scientist with the data center.
"It's likely we are going to surpass the record decline by a fair amount this year by the time all is said and done."
The ice?is expected to dwindle until mid- to late-September when the summer melting usually ends, according to the center.
Shrinking of the Arctic?ices alarms scientists and environmentalists because the Arctic?acts as the world's air conditioner, helping to moderate the globe's climate.
As parts of the Arctic?melted, this year has been marked by record heat in much of the Northern Hemisphere, especially across the continental?United States?which has been ravaged by drought.
Most scientists blame global warming for the retreat of the Arctic ice?and there is concern that the growing amounts of open water means the Arctic?will not be as effective moderating the planet's climate.
"These preliminary figures provide irrefutable evidence that greenhouse gas emissions leading to global warming are damaging one of the planet's critical environments, one that helps maintain the stability of the global climate for every citizen of the world," said?Kumi Naidoo, executive director of?Greenpeace.

Shortly after dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops went extinct 65 million years ago, Earth's ancient landscapes were filled with unusual mammals only distantly related to those alive today. Until recently, one of these creatures, Ernanodon antelios, was only known from a single, highly distorted specimen that raised many questions about its habits and evolutionary relationships. In the most recent issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, scientists describe a second specimen of Ernanodon that sheds new light on this curious beast from the dawn of the "Age of Mammals."
The remarkable new skeleton comes from rocks in Mongolia that were deposited 57 million years ago during a period known as the Paleocene Epoch.
"Ernanodon is a unique find and represents one of the most complete skeletons ever collected from the Paleocene of the Naran Bulak locality," said Alexander Agadjanian of the Borissiak Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, co-author of the study.
The first specimen was discovered by a team of Soviet paleontologists in 1979 but remained unstudied for more than thirty years. The new specimen preserves most of the arms, legs, and backbone of the badger-sized animal, including many bones that were not preserved in the first specimen. The authors of the new study made detailed comparisons among the bones of Ernanodon and those of modern mammals and concluded that Ernanodon was highly specialized for digging. It may have dug for food, for shelter, or both.
"Only a handful of Asian Paleocene mammals are known by their postcranial skeleton, which makes Ernanodon a unique source of very important information about its habits, lifestyle, and affinities," said Peter Kondrashov of A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, lead author of the study.
The strong limbs and large claws of Ernanodon, combined with its unusual, simplified teeth, have caused much confusion about its evolutionary relationships. Some scientists thought Ernanodon was an ancient relative of modern armadillos and anteaters, whereas other scientists thought Ernanodon was more closely related to a group of African and Asian ant-eating mammals known as pangolins or "scaly anteaters." The new study concludes that Ernanodon was a closer relative of pangolins than armadillos and anteaters, but that it represents a very early side branch of the pangolin family tree.
"Few other fossil mammals presented as many controversies in the scientific world as Ernanodon did and we are glad the new skeleton helped us resolve them," Kondrashov added.

In the year 2000, the World Health Organization WHO reckoned that 171 million people all over the world were suffering from diabetes. Experts predict that by the year 2030, there will be approximately 366 million people affected by the disease. Diabetes belongs to a group of metabolic diseases leading to a high and life-threatening blood sugar. Most popularly, the defect is divided into two subcategories: diabetes type one and diabetes type two. Whereas type one is caused by a failure to produce the hormone insulin and often occurs at an early age, type two results from an insulin resistance developing with age. However, there is also an in-between type which has been coined diabetes type 1.5 and which is also known as LADA, i.e. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults.
LADA: How come?
The in-between type is described as a condition in which diabetes type one develops in an adult age. That is due to the fact that the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells can occur at different rates. If it happens fast, it leads to symptoms at an early age (type one), if it happens slowly, it leads to problems at a later age (LADA). In order to test an emerging diabetes type one, and to avoid a misdiagnosis of type two which also happens at an adult age, it is necessary to conduct antibody tests. People suffering from LADA can show a positive reaction to the antibodies test, people suffering from type two are unlikely to do so. Laboratories own ELISA kits for scientific research in order to get the results.
Avoiding a misdiagnosis
It is estimated that 20 percent of the people officially suffering from diabetes type two actually suffer from type 1.5. In order to optimize the treatment of these people, which does not in every case require an insulin therapy but might also be managed through changes in nutrition and lifestyle, antibody tests should be conducted more than once as it may track the progression of the disease. The building inspector is required to work on important aspects of the construction process as the structure, strength, while the interiors are not under his control. He controls the solidity of the structure, not the cosmetic additions to the building.
The first day of the exam of your home, the inspector should look at the Foundation, reinforcements (along with the foundation wall) and once the water resistance as well. Entering a new city and trying to find a reliable Builder may present a problem for some people. Is a great idea for the buyer to make contact with the building inspector. An inspector will recommend builders usually good though he couldn?t tell which one is the best out of the lot.
Another problem for home buyers is when you buy a House that has already been completely built. A local inspector must ask to check the roof for any abnormalities, if the Foundation is cracked and/or level, the ports for any sounds and plaster for cracks. In one day of its finish, the home is thoroughly checked by the Inspector for any dangers to life and he guarantees that it is safe for you to move in.
The building inspector is not solely responsible in making sure that the home is safe and sound. Nobody is responsible, but the home buyer. When you need a help, building inspectors are always there to lend a hand.
President Barack Obama, in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, sought to steal some of Mitt Romney's thunder as he heads into the Republican National Convention beginning Monday in Tampa, Fla. Obama said Romney's policies would hurt the middle class and enrich the wealthy.
Here are some of the highlights of the 25-minute interview in the White House library:
ROMNEY-EXTREMISM
Said Romney has taken on "extreme positions" that are consistent with the views of many House Republicans and said he would expect the former Massachusetts governor to advance some of those positions if he won the White House. Said he expected Romney to pursue a $5 trillion tax cut, the rolling back of reproductive rights for women and the elimination of tax credits for wind producers if elected.
THE ECONOMY
Acknowledged that the nation's economy has not improved fast enough for many people and "we aren't where we need to be." But said Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families while benefiting the wealthy and not offer long-term opportunities for poor Americans trying to get into the middle class.
ROMNEY'S TAXES
Accused Romney of not willing to live up to some of the responsibilities required of someone seeking the presidency, pointing to his unwillingness to release multiple years of federal tax returns. Said when you run for president, you're asking the American people to "put their trust in you" and as a result candidates need to disclose their tax records.
ROMNEY THE BUSINESSMAN
Credited Romney with achieving "extraordinary success" with his business and said he cares "deeply" about his family and faith. But said Romney's view of the economy was "contradicted by the facts" and accused his opponent of pursuing policies that have not benefited the economy in the past.
PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES
Called Romney a "very capable debater" and said his opponent performed well in debates during the GOP primaries. But said Romney would face challenges in the fall debates because the arguments he's making "just aren't based on facts."
SECOND TERM AGENDA
Said if he wins a second term, voters will have cast a "decisive view" and expressed hope that Republicans would be willing to end the stalemate in Congress with Democrats. Said he was willing to make a number of compromises, including those that might bring criticism from Democrats, in order to make progress. Said he expected Republicans to make similar compromises as well.
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The South African government is working with Lonmin to reach a "peace accord" between warring factions after violence stemming from a union turf war killed 44 people last week, the world no. 3 platinum producer said on Friday.
"Lonmin's management is committed to this process and its absolute focus in the coming days will be to reach a peace accord, under the auspices of the Department of Labour, which allows for a peaceful return to work," the company said in a statement.
Lonmin's South African operations have been paralysed since an illegal strike involving 3,000 rock driller operators started two weeks ago and exploded into violent clashes that killed 44 people including 34 striking workers gunned down by police.
The violence stems from a fight for members between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (AMCU) and the small but militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) which has been spreading through the sector.
"We welcome the Department of Labour's efforts in facilitating the peace accord," Lonmin's acting chief executive Simon Scott said.
Lonmin accounts for about 12 percent of global platinum output and the freezing of its mining operations has driven the price of the white metal up by around 10 percent.
The company said about 23 percent of its 28,000-strong workforce showed up for shifts on Friday but that is far short of the numbers needed to started pulling ore from the earth.
"Mining operations will only resume once we have sufficient workers in attendance and the necessary safety procedures have been undertaken," Lonmin said.
The striking workers have been demanding a monthly wage of 12,500 rand. The company says they currently get about 9,800 rand per month with an average monthly bonus of 1,500 rand.
North Korea's leader has warned of an "all-out" war against the South while denouncing its ongoing joint military drill with the United States, state media said Sunday.
The US and South Korean militaries on Monday began a two-week exercise aimed at testing defences against the communist North, insisting it was defensive in nature but Pyongyang called it a drill for a preemptive nuclear attack.
More than 30,000 US troops, including most of those based in the South plus 3,000 from overseas, are taking part in the annual joint drill known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un called the drill a grave threat and said his army was ready to deal "deadly blows" if their territory was violated during the exercise.
"If the enemies fire even a single shell on our inviolable territory... the whole army should turn out as one and lead the battle to an all-out counter-offensive," said the leader, according to KCNA news agency.
The courageous officers... are now waiting for a final order for charge for a life-and-death battle against the enemies," Kim was quoted as saying in a speech to army officials Saturday. "There is a limit to our patience."
Kim, believed to be in his late 20s, took over the impoverished but nuclear-armed nation after his late father and longtime ruler Kim Jong-Il died last December.
On the eve of the ongoing drill, the young leader visited a frontliner artillery unit that carried out a deadly 2010 bombardment of a South Korean island near the disputed western sea border.
Kim praised its personnel as heroes and told them never to tolerate enemy aggression.
The two Koreas have remained technically at war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, without a subsequent peace treaty.
Cross-border tensions have been high since the South accused the North of torpedoing one of its warships with the loss of 46 lives in March 2010.
The North angrily denied involvement but went on to shell the Yeonpyeong island in November of the same year, killing four South Koreans including two civilians.

Updated at 5 p.m. ET: Tropical Storm Isaac built up strength Friday as it headed towards landfall in Haiti overnight, while a tropical storm watch was issued for the Florida Keys and other parts of southern Florida.
With sustained winds now at 65 mph, up from 50 mph Friday morning, Isaac could pass near Florida's Gulf Coast early Monday just as the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start in Tampa.?
Winds at tropical storm strength extend 185 miles out from Isaac's center, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an afternoon advisory, making it a very wide storm.
On exiting Haiti, Isaac's center should cross Cuba on Saturday, and then pass south of the Florida Keys before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane overnight Tuesday somewhere between New Orleans and Tallahassee, NBC meteorologist Al Roker said Friday on TODAY. Warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico will be "energy for the storm" as it makes its way across the gulf, he added.

The U.S. embassy in Haiti sent an e-mail to American citizens in the country warning that flights into and out of Port-au-Prince have been suspended due to Isaac.
Oil and gas producers in the Gulf of Mexico started preparing as Isaac's track looked to skirt the heart of the U.S. offshore energy producing zone. BP?said it would shut down its giant Thunder Horse platform, the world's largest. Royal Dutch Shell and Apache Corp. said they would evacuate some workers from their Gulf platforms with no production impacts. Other offshore drillers were likely to shut production in coming days as the storm approaches.
The U.S. military moved 22 F-16s from?Homestead Air Reserve Base in Florida to Fort Worth, Texas. Three F-15s from the base are on alert to move to Jacksonville if necessary.
Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane since 2005 and officials are concerned that residents there have become complacent.
"I think it's a challenge of getting people to understand their risk and make sure they?ve got a plan," said Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
With more than 19 million people living across the Sunshine State, Fugate wants every Florida resident to have enough supplies to last 72 hours and to know when to evacuate.

"I think the most dangerous thing is when people keep waiting to see what the next forecast is even if they?re in an evacuation zone. They say, 'Oh, it?s just a Category 1 storm or a minimum hurricane.' We?ve seen significant impacts from tropical storm force winds and rain," Fugate added.
In the Florida Keys, where there are few routes available for evacuation -- U.S. 1, Key West International Airport, and the Florida Keys Marathon Airport -- Mayor Craig Cates said his biggest concern was the storm's timing. Cates said he would need at least 36 hours to begin evacuations of tourists and residents.
"If it (Isaac) comes straight on to Key West, we?re worried about the damage that could happen in Key West. If it goes further up the Keys, it could damage power lines and we could get affected," Cates said. "Even if it hits further up the state, we have got to be prepared with our generators and our supplies. Being on an island, we understand that."
Tampa officials have not ruled out the possibility of postponing the GOP Convention if the storm poses a public safety risk. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.
Forecasters with The Weather Channel think the evacuation decisions could come quickly. It is anticipated that watches will be issued for South Florida and the Keys by Friday night. In the event of an evacuation, Cates told The Weather Channel that tourists would leave first, followed by special needs citizens.?

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said?state officials are working with convention organizers, who will ultimately make the call on a delay or cancellation of the event.
State officials?announced Thursday that they will wait to make decisions about moving supplies until after Isaac passes Cuba. FEMA has already placed food and generators in Jacksonville. ?
Isaac is forecast to remain a tropical storm after crossing the Dominican Republic and Haiti and then passing over Cuba into the Florida Straits.
The National Hurricane Center?warned it was "important not to focus on the exact track because of forecast uncertainties and the fact that Isaac has a large area of tropical storm force winds."

Isaac was expected to dump between 8 and 12 inches of rain over parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and up to 20 inches in a few areas. That poses a significant threat to Haiti, which is highly prone to flooding and mudslides because of its near-total deforestation.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, still has about 350,000 people living in tents or makeshift shelters more than 2-1/2 years after a devastating earthquake that took more than a quarter of a million lives.
With nearly 400,000 people still living in evacuation tents, a hurricane or even a tropical storm could lead to deaths and more damage to the already fragile country. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic evacuated people living on the banks of rivers, streams and areas vulnerable to landslides in preparation for the approach of Isaac, whose effects were beginning to be felt with showers in the south of the country.

WORLD NEWS ? The US military has been launching cyberattacks against its opponents in Afghanistan, a senior officer says, making an unusually explicit acknowledgment of the oft-hidden world of electronic warfare.
Marine Lt. Gen. Richard P. Mills? comments came last week at a conference in Baltimore during which he explained how US commanders considered cyber weapons an important part of their arsenal.
?I can tell you that as a commander in Afghanistan in the year 2010, I was able to use my cyber operations against my adversary with great impact,? Mills said. ?I was able to get inside his nets, infect his command-and-control, and in fact defend myself against his almost constant incursions to get inside my wire, to affect my operations.?
Mills, now a deputy commandant with the Marine Corps, was in charge of international forces in southwestern Afghanistan between 2010 and 2011, according to his official biography. He didn?t go into any further detail as to the nature or scope of his forces? attacks, but experts said that such a public admission that they were being carried out was itself striking.
?This is news,? said James Lewis, a cyber-security analyst with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. He said that while it was generally known in defense circles that cyberattacks had been carried out by US forces in Afghanistan, he had never seen a senior officer take credit for them in such a way.
?It?s not secret,? Lewis said in a telephone interview, but he added: ?I haven?t seen as explicit a statement on this as the one? Mills made.
Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Damien Pickart declined to elaborate on Mills? comments, saying in an email that ?for reasons of security . we do not provide specific information regarding our intentions, plans, capabilities or operations.?
The email said that the Pentagon?s cyber operations were properly authorized and that they took place within the bounds of international law and the ?confines of existing policy.?
US defense planners have spent the past few years debating that policy, asking how and under what circumstances the Pentagon would launch a cyberattack against its enemies, but it?s only recently become apparent that a sophisticated program of US-backed cyberattacks is already under way.
A book by The New York Times reporter David Sanger recently recounted how President Barack Obama ordered a wave of electronic incursions aimed at physically sabotaging Iran?s disputed atomic energy program. Subsequent reports have linked the program to a virus dubbed Flame, which prompted a temporary Internet blackout across Iran?s oil industry in April, and another virus called Gauss, which appeared to have been aimed at stealing information from customers of Lebanese banks. An earlier report alleged that US forces in Iraq had hacked into a terrorist group?s computer there to lure its members into an ambush.
Herbert Lin, a cyber expert at the National Research Council, agreed that Mills? comments were unusual in terms of the fact that they were made publicly. But Lin said that the United States was, little by little, opening up about the fact that its military was launching attacks across the Internet.
?The US military is starting to talk more and more in terms of what it?s doing and how it?s doing it,? he said. ?A couple of years ago it was hard to get them to acknowledge that they were doing offense at all ? even as a matter of policy, let alone in specific theaters or specific operations.?
Mills? brief comments about cyberattacks in Afghanistan were delivered to the TechNet Land Forces East conference in Baltimore on Aug. 15, but they did not appear to have attracted much attention at the time. Footage of the speech was only recently posted to the Internet by conference organizers.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican National Convention officials say Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, will be speaking during prime-time television coverage of the event.
The presumptive Republican nominee said Friday that he was "disappointed" that the networks weren't planning to broadcast more of the convention.
"I know a number of the networks are looking to put money to the bottom line and they might not think that three hours or four hours of broadcasting a convention makes economic sense for them," Romney said. "But this is an important time for our nation."
Romney, in a radio interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show," said his wife's convention speech is finished. But his speech is "still a work in progress."
Mrs. Romney is a key surrogate in a race where women voters are fiercely sought after by Romney and Democratic President Barack Obama.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising national figure in the party, had offered to give up his slot speaking Thursday for Mrs. Romney, who was scheduled to speak on Monday, the convention's opening night. Broadcast television networks were not planning to cover Monday's proceedings in Tampa.
However, the freshman senator and tea party favorite will keep his Thursday slot, and address the convention in his home state just before Romney closes the convention with his acceptance speech.

A Kickstarter entry has managed to stir the fairness pot by touting a MakerBot Replicator clone called TangiBot -- legally copied from the original 3D printer's open source plans. The project's creator, Matt Strong, says that the device will offer "the same performance and features at a roughly 33 percent discount" to Makerbot's $1,800 price tag, thanks to Chinese manufacturing. That's inflamed some in the 3D printing fraternity, who take exception to the exact copying of a design without any improvement. The founder is unrepentant, however, saying that "MakerBot's technology is nothing new" and insists his replica product's lower price will open up 3D printing to more hobbyists. TangiBot has addressed a trademark gripe from its doppleganger by removing the MakerBot references from Kickstarter -- but hey, we know a KIRF when we see one.
