Romney and GOP announce $100M fundraising haul

Mitt Romney and the Republican Party had another huge fundraising month in July ? raising more than $101.3 million to defeat President Obama in November.

The July haul marks the second straight month that Romney and the GOP took in more than $100 million, falling just shy of June's $106 million total.

With three months until Election Day, the Romney campaign, Republican National Committee and Romney Victory Fund now have about $185.9 million in the bank.

Democrats have not released their July total yet, but the Obama campaign has issued increasingly-urgent fundraising pleas in recent weeks fretting about the growing cash gap between the two parties.

Romney outraised Obama by $16 million in May and by $35 million in June.

While Romney has benefitted from massive contributions by wealthy donors, the GOP noted that more than 94 percent of the donations it received in July were of $250 or less. Of the total, 600,627 donations received were under $250 in July, representing $25.7 million.

"Once again we see that for many people, this is more than a campaign, it is a cause," Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement announcing the July total.

"We are well on track to raise the money to be successful in November," Zwick added.

Obama is hoping to help shrink the gap with two fundraisers in Connecticut Monday night. One, hosted by actress Anne Hathaway and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, will be held at the $15.5 million beachfront estate of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, according to The Hartford Courant.
