'Hunger Games' sequel reportedly eyeing Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and Garrett Hedlund for the role; let's take a closer look.

Fans have been rallying behind their favorite actors to star in "The Hunger Games" since the books were released. The most popular character to speculate about is Finnick Odair, who makes his debut in the franchise's second novel, "Catching Fire."
With the movie set to begin filming in the fall, rumors have been flying surrounding who will land the role of the dreamy District 4 victor. Most recently, Robert Pattinson was linked to the part, and even though fans supported him, he quickly denied those rumors.
With countless actors' names tossed into the casting hat, there's speculation that the film may be down to its final three choices for Finnick. E! Online reports a source who revealed the top guys in the running are "Battleship" star Taylor Kitsch, "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer and "TRON: Legacy" star Garrett Hedlund. When MTV News reached out to Lionsgate for confirmation, we received this statement: "Like the first film, Lionsgate won't be commenting on any of the rumors until we officially announce."
Alongside "Bridesmaids," "The Hunger Games" is the most-nominated film at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards landing eight nods including Best Kiss, Best Cast and the coveted Movie of the Year. Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for Best Actress, Josh Hutcherson is up for Best Actor and Liam Hemsworth has a shot at Breakthrough Performance. There's still time to vote for your favorite stars before the awards air this Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET by heading over to MovieAwards.MTV.com. So while we wait to see which film is your favorite and which leading man is joining this incredible cast of stars, we thought we'd take a look at the good and bad of each actor landing the role of Finnick.
Taylor Kitsch
The Good: If you've seen "Friday Night Lights," you know Kitsch's ability to play a self-assured character. As womanizer Tim Riggins, he certainly knows how to gaze at a lady until she swoons. Finnick exudes the same arrogant charm — though he's more of a one-woman man. At one point in "Catching Fire," he reads a poem to the citizens of the Capitol dedicated to his one true love, and many of the audience members faint, believing it's about them. Kitsch certainly has that same charisma to capture viewers' attention.
The Bad: Kitsch's huge roles aren't gaining him any box-office success. After Disney shelled out $250 million on the epic "John Carter," it raked in only $30.6 million domestically its first weekend in theaters. Similarly, he headed up Peter Berg's "Battleship," which was released in theaters May 18 and currently has a 34 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While he'd be a supporting character to Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss, he may need the success of the franchise more than the franchise needs him.
Armie Hammer
The Good: Like Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, Hammer played a vital role in a film nominated for Best Picture at the 83rd annual Academy Awards. With "The Social Network" under his belt, he'd fit right in with Lawrence, who was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Winter's Bone," and Hutcherson, whose film "The Kids Are All Right" was also nominated for Original Screenplay. He can hold his own in the spotlight and already understands the fame that comes with a wildly popular film. If the casting directors continue on their award-winning path, choosing Hammer is a no-brainer.
The Bad: His tight schedule may conflict with "The Hunger Games" when it begins filming. He's currently working on "The Lone Ranger" with Johnny Depp and is already linked to three other films with tentative 2013-14 release dates: "By Virtue Fall," "Cut Bank" and "2:22." Since this role is so important to fans, they won't want an actor who may not be able to devote 100 percent to the project.
Garrett Hedlund
The Good: Hedlund recently made his way to the Cannes Film Festival, where he debuted his film "On the Road" alongside "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart. While the film itself received mixed reviews, Owen Gleiberman from Entertainment Weekly singled out Hedlund's acting, writing, "The best thing in the movie is Garrett Hedlund's performance as Dean Moriarty. ... [He] is as hunky as the young Brad Pitt, and like Pitt, he's a wily, change-up actor. He gives Dean eyes that glitter with a seductive enthusiasm that borders on being a little cracked." Did that last sentence also instantly remind you of Finnick, "Hunger Games" fans?
The Bad: While he's been fairly successful in films like "Country Strong" and "Four Brothers," he hasn't had enough roles allowing him to prove his abilities to take on such a large project. The role of Finnick may shock him a bit, especially considering the fame that's sure to come along with it. But then again, he could always ask Stewart for advice.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? The son of Malcolm X's biographer is asking Syracuse University to hand over a letter in which the slain activist writes about his shifting views on race relations, claiming his family is the rightful owner.
Malcolm X wrote to Alex Haley, his collaborator for "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," from Saudi Arabia in April 1964, about ten months before he was gunned down at a New York City hotel ballroom. The publisher of the autobiography later gave the letter to Syracuse University as part of a larger cache of papers to be used by researchers.
But Haley's son, William Haley, said the publisher never had legal title to the letter and could not give it away. His lawyer said Tuesday he plans to make a legal demand this week for the letter, which he believes is worth at least $650,000.
"The history is important for us as a family, the legacy," William Haley said. Haley said he was acting on behalf of himself and his two sisters. Haley said it's possible the family would decide to sell the letter, but that would be a group decision.
Alex Haley died in 1992.
"So much of African-American history gets lost and is sometimes not in the place where we prefer it to be," Haley said.
Malcolm X's letter, written after a pilgrimage to Mecca, addresses the recent time he spent with Muslims "whose skin was the whitest of white."
"In fact, what I have seen and experienced on this pilgrimage has forced me to 're arrange' much of my thought patterns, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions," he wrote.
The letter was sent to publisher Grove Press for inclusion in the autobiography, which was first published in 1965. Grove included the letter in files it gave to Syracuse University in 1969.
Sean M. Quimby, senior director of the university's Special Collections Research Center, said it has documentation from Grove that shows Syracuse owns the transferred archive. He said the school's ownership had never been challenged before in 43 years and he has not seen any evidence that the letter was lent, instead of given, to Grove.
"Our library and our special collections are publicly available to anyone, and there is a greater good served," Quimby added.
Haley's attorney, Gregory J. Reed of Detroit, said Haley passed along the letter to Grove only so it could be included in the autobiography and that Grove never had legal title.
Haley said he is acting now because he only found out about details of the letter recently after talking to Reed, who collects Malcolm X material.

Will Smith made his long-awaited return to multiplexes and seized the number one spot at the North American box office with his new sci-fi sequel Men in Black 3 which booted The Avengers down to second place in its fourth weekend. Boosted by higher ticket prices for 3D and IMAX screens, the PG-13 film averaged $12,947 over three days and $16,478 over four days from an ultrawide 4,248 theaters. Comparisons to the first two Men in Black films are uneven since those both debuted mid-week ahead of the Fourth of July holiday frames. Plus they did not have 3D surcharges and ticket prices were significantly lower back in 1997 for the original film and 2002 for the first sequel. Still, those Friday-to-Sunday debuts were $51.1M and $52.1M respectively indicating a big drop in admissions this time around for the aging franchise.
Reviews were fairly good for MIB3 which reunited Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and director Barry Sonnenfeld with Josh Brolin added to the cast of the new time-travel story. The production cost is estimated to be $230M which is to be expected for a star-driven threequel. Smith has not had a film since the flop Seven Pounds from December 2008 and has not had a number one hit, or any action movie, since Hancock from July 2008. The new alien pic earned a good B+ grade from CinemaScore.
Rejuvenating a franchise after a decade-long absence was a challenge as was attracting audiences when The Avengers is doing so well with action-hungry moviegoers. The four-day opening does not even rank among the top ten best Memorial Day weekend debuts despite the help from 3D prices. A series of red carpet premieres in Asia and Europe helped to drive excitement with the leading markets being China ($19.5M), Russia ($18.9M), Korea ($8.5M), and Japan ($8M). Thanks to growth overseas since the last MIB, domestic shortfalls could be made up from strong international sales.
Dropping out of the number one spot didn't stop The Avengers from racking up more impressive numbers and breaking additional records. The assembly of super heroes took in an estimated $46.9M in its fourth weekend with the three-day portion of $36.8M declining by only 34% making for a terrific hold as holiday moviegoers caught up on the most-talked-about movie of the year. Johnny Depp's vampire comedy Dark Shadows followed with an estimated $9.4M across four days for a total of only $64.9M for the expensive Warner Bros. release.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Loyola of Maryland took a much slower route to the NCAA lacrosse championship game than the Greyhounds are accustomed to.
The top-seeded Greyhounds struggled against Notre Dame's tight defense, breaking through just often enough to pull ahead by four goals and hold off the Fighting Irish 7-5 in the semifinals Saturday.
It was the fewest goals the Greyhounds (17-1) scored in a game this season. Eric Lusby matched a career high with five goals, and Jack Runkel made up with 11 of his career-best 15 saves in the second half as Loyola held on despite failing to score in the final 26:41.
"They didn't want to let us run," Loyola coach Charley Toomey said. "They took us out of what we like to do and they made it a battle out there."
Loyola's previous low for the season was eight goals. Seven suited the Greyhounds just fine Saturday as they extended their winning streak to five and advanced to the title game for the second time.
"That shows the character of this team," Toomey said. "They'll recognize the situation and play to it."
The Greyhounds will play Maryland - a 16-10 winner over Duke in the second semifinal - in the title game Monday. Loyola lost to Syracuse in the 1990 championship game in its only other appearance in the final.
Notre Dame finished 13-3.
The Irish dominated the faceoffs 13-1, but couldn't convert enough into points.
"I think the biggest problem was we didn't shoot well," said Sean Rogers, who scored in the fourth quarter for the Irish. "We've been playing really good offense thus far through the tournament and our shooting was the main reason for that. Today we didn't shoot in the right spots."
The Irish ended a scoring drought of 24:46 with goals in a 50-second span to pull to 7-5 with 6:28 left. Rogers had the first goal, and Westy Hopkins added his second of the game.
But Runkel was there to stop everything else that came his way and the Greyhounds held off several late pushes by the Irish
"He was big. He was as big as he's ever been in there for us," said Toomey, a member of Loyola's national runner-up team in 1990. "When there was a breakdown, Runk was right there to pick up the pieces."
Lusby scored three goals in the first half to help Loyola take a 5-3 lead, then added two more quick goals early in the second half. Lusby put Loyola up 6-3 26 seconds into the third quarter, and made it 7-3 with 11:40 left in the period.
"I thought we were going to get a couple more," said Lusby, who scored five goals for the second straight game and reached 50 for the season. "I'm playing pretty confident. I see net and I shoot for net. I don't really try to pick the corners. When you try to aim for the exact spot, then you start to mess with your head."

educators in the United States and the Arab World, Woods said. Hosted by the Bilateral US-Arab Chamber of Commerce, the purpose of the symposium is to raise awareness, understanding, and cooperation between educators in the United States and the Middle East, he said.
?I think these are wonderful opportunities on so many levels,? Woods said. ?It?s an opportunity to explore the question of academic freedom, for example. There is so much I want to explore.?

Researchers have theorized that inhibiting HSP90 just might render breast cancer cells less likely to escape the challenge posed by cutting off their ability to use estrogen. Such is the rationale for a new clinical trial that has begun enrolling patients this week.
In the trial, patients with recurrent or metastatic estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer will be treated either with fulvestrant, a drug currently marketed by AstraZeneca as Faslodex, or with a combination of fulvestrant and ganetespib, a drug which inhibits HSP90 and is now in clinical development by Synta Pharmaceuticals.
The trial's principal investigator is Nancy Lin, the Clinical Director of the Breast Oncology Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Lin is collaborating with Luke Whitesell, an oncologist and senior research scientist in the lab of Whitehead Institute Member Susan Lindquist.
Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. An estimated 40,000 women in the United States are expected to die from the disease this year. In the developed world, approximately two-thirds of all breast cancer cases are ER+. Highly dependent on their estrogen receptors for growth and survival, these tumor cells are sensitive to hormonal therapies, making drugs like tamoxifen and fulvestrant effective first-line therapies for many patients.
However, in patients with breast cancers that recur or metastasize after initial hormonal therapy, long-term remission is uncommon and life expectancy is about three years. Currently, these patients have few therapeutic options. By adding an HSP90 inhibitor, Lin and Whitesell hope to hobble the resistant cancer cells, making them less likely to escape the effects of fulvestrant.
Lin likens a malignant tumor to a car on a highway in a high-speed chase. As the car hurtles down the road, police may erect a roadblock to stop it. In the case of ER+ breast cancer, that roadblock is hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, a tumor may mutate enough to find a detour around the roadblock and continue on its destructive course. Adding a heat shock protein inhibitor to the mix may thwart the cancer's ability to find an alternate route.
"Because of the way HSP90 inhibitors work, it's like throwing a bunch of roadblocks across a bunch of detours," says Lin, who will be running the clinical part of the trial. "So the idea is to try to block these alternative pathways that might allow the tumor to grow."
"Inhibiting HSP90 in tumors may not cause them to roll over and die," says Whitesell, who with support from Susan G. Komen for the Cure will be analyzing blood and tissue samples from trial participants. "But it may change the biology of the cancer to make it more susceptible to other things that we already know work against the cancer, like fulvestrant."
The trial's premise is based on years of work the Lindquist lab has conducted on heat shock proteins. That experience is invaluable, according to Sandro Santagata, a pathologist in the Lindquist lab who will also be examining patient tissue samples.
"The Lindquist lab has a great basic scientific understanding of the biology of the heat shock system," says Santagata. "That foundation will hopefully provide important insights to increase the likelihood of success for this trial and if it doesn't work, an understanding of why. That's always a tricky part. Figuring out the 'why' is always complicated so it helps to have people like Susan and Luke who have a lot of background in the system you're studying."
For her part, Lindquist says she is looking forward to testing the therapeutic potential of targeting HSP90.
"I am very excited about the translational applications of some of the basic science we have been working on over the years," says Lindquist, who is also a professor of biology at MIT and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. "Luke and I are thrilled to be working with Nancy Lin."
