NY school's blackface assault skit criticized

(AP) ? A pep rally skit by three white high school students who wore blackface and parodied Chris Brown's arrest for assaulting Rihanna has officials in a largely white New York district vowing to set clearer expectations for school events.

The skit was one of several pop culture parodies performed Friday at Waverly High School as part of an annual "Mr. Waverly" competition, Superintendent Joseph Yelich said. The one in question had a male student portraying Brown standing over another cowering actor playing Rihanna; a third male student played an arresting officer.

A picture from the skit posted to social media and other sites including Facebook, Tumblr and CNN iReport drew thousands of views and dozens of comments, many calling the skit blatantly racist and blasting the idea of drawing laughs from domestic violence.

Brown was sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to felony assault for the attack on Rihanna in 2009. Both singers are black.

Yelich said he has not kept track of the number of complaints to the small district in southern New York's Tioga County but said the "Mr. Waverly" tradition is being re-examined. Other skits featured Tarzan chasing a gorilla, hockey players brawling, and Spider-Man.

"I mean, this is a pep rally; we're supposed to be cheering on our team," said Yelich, who has been on the job a little over a year. "The fact that skits are involved and parodies ... it strayed from that and it got into a different kind of competition."

A Waverly High alumnus who posted comments on CNN said that while he doesn't believe the students meant to offend, he was surprised administrators didn't intervene.

"There were adults who should have stood up and said, 'Hey, guys, this is not OK. Blackface is not OK. Is it illegal? No. But you should really not do that,'" Matthew Dishler, 24, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Rose Garrity, executive director of A New Hope Center, an agency in nearby Oswego County that assists victims of domestic and sexual abuse and other crimes, also put responsibility on the adults.

"They were trying to make something funny that is far from funny, and they were being incredibly racist while they were doing it," Garrity said. "I doubt any of those children had any idea about the history of racism and minstrels or anything like that."

Garrity said her agency has been working with Waverly and other districts on anti-violence and anti-bullying programs and would continue its outreach.

"Domestic violence isn't funny," Garrity said. "Three women every day are killed in this country by the man they're partnered with. It's anything but funny."

Video: Could second presidential debate reset the race?

>> much. msnbc political analyst steve schmitt is a republican strategist and adviser on john mccain 's presidential campaign and jennifer gran home hosts "the war room " on current tv . nice to see you. you've run your fair share of campaigns. is it in the realm of possibility that paul ryan was washing clean dishes, would a campaign do it?

>> it is absolutely within the realm of possibility.

>> i thought you were going to say no.

>> and those dishes are extra clean now, absolutely.

>> wow. governor. let me go to you. before the first debate it seemed all the pressure was on mitt romney that he was presidential and could handle the big stage. boy, is the shoe on the other foot.

>> i know.

>> all the pressure on president obama . is this game seven, to use a sports analogy, win or go home for him in.

>> it's not win or go home because there's a third debate so the question for him though is can he put that first debate behind him? and i think he can. he's really just got to talk about what he's done, how the economy is moved, and he cannot let the misstatements sit there like he did in the first debate.

>> in other words, he's got to go after mitt romney and challenge him to come up with specifics?

>> it's a target rich environment, if you will, because there's been a lot of ambiguities.

>> no question, steve, that there's going to be a different barack obama facing mitt romney tonight. can mitt romney use that to his advantage. can he look at voters and say which president obama is in the room right now, the way that president obama is probably going to say to voters which mitt romney is in the room, the conservative or the moderate?

>> sure, absolutely, and president obama has to be very careful not to overcompensate after the bad first performance by coming out tonight by being too negative, being too hot. if he does that it could backfire badly with a very small group of voters that are going to decide this election.

>> here's what obama is now saying on the campaign trail. he's saying, quote, after running for more than a year in which he called himself severely conservative mitt romney is trying to convince you he was severely kidding. how does mitt romney answer that question why have you moved to the middle tonight?

>> i don't think he has to answer that question.

>> i think he does.

>> i think the one thing that everybody in this country knows is that mitt romney has had a flexibility were his positions on any one of a number of issues. it's about what is the plan to move the country forward. what is his plan to create economic growth, and i think if obama spends his evening trying to point out something that everybody already understands, it's going to be difficult for him.

>> if everybody already understands that he was a severely conservative guy who is trying to put on this facade of being a moderate, that's a question of trust. who are you really? what is your core? and if you are masking what you are really bringing, then i think the president can really take advantage of that.

>> there's been some discussion of the moderator in this, candy crowley . a town hall style debate. the questions coming from undecided voters , but candy in interviews on her network say i feel i have the right to follow up questions as i see necessary, and it seems both campaigns are a bit upset by this because it's been carefully negotiated, but we're choosing the leader of the free world here. shouldn't voters expect that these guys can handle a couple of follow-up questions.

>> you go, girl. that's what i say.

>> i thought you were talking to me, that's weird. i didn't know where you were going.

>> you're overreacting, matt.

>> that shouldn't be an issue.

>> there's no bad question, only bad answers and both campaigns will try to work the refs a little bit before the debate and be prepared for whatever comes.

>> real quickly, you don't get to ask the question tonight, governor. what's the one question you would like to ask of mitt romney tonight?

>> personally i would want to ask him are you going to have a litmus test for appointing justices to the supreme court to overturn "roe v. wade" like you said in the president.

>> and your one question for the president?

>> why would the next four years be any different than the last four?

>> we're moving, man, come on.

>> wait until the physical violence at least holds off to the end.

>> thank you very much. you can watch the debate tonight at 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific time right here on nbc.

UBS rogue trader loss less than crisis damage, UK court told

LONDON (Reuters) - UBS's losses in the financial crisis dwarfed a $2.3 billion hit from a rogue trading scandal last year and caused longer-lasting damage, lawyers for accused fraudster Kweku Adoboli said in court on Monday.

Adoboli's lawyers have so far argued at his trial that he believed he was trading for the good of the bank, and that colleagues had turned a blind eye to his practices.

In a fresh tack on Monday, lawyers questioned Tom Naratil -- chief financial officer at UBS and the most senior executive to appear as a witness -- on the impact of other losses and probes on the Swiss bank and its share price.

Adoboli, 32, who was arrested in September 2011, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of fraud and false accounting. He denies the charges.

Charles Sherrard, representing Adoboli, said UBS lost close to 50 billion Swiss francs ($53.53 billion) because of the financial crisis and its share price fell almost 80 percent between January 2008 and the day before the trading loss was uncovered in September 2011.

Naratil, appearing via videolink from New York, said that UBS's share price dropped 10 percent when the $2.3 billion loss was announced and had recovered eight days later.

Despite this recovery, Naratil said that the impact on UBS had been material.

"A double-digit decline in the stock price in a single day is a significant event," Naratil said.

The prosecution, which has portrayed Adoboli as a gambler routinely exceeding his trading limits and concealing trades, argued that the damage caused by one person in a day and by an economic crisis could not easily be compared, and did not in the second instance involve allegations of fraud at UBS.

Naratil, who described last year's trading loss as a "very trying time" for UBS employees, said about 500 people were made redundant at the bank after the trading scandal was exposed.

Asked to quantify how many of those layoffs resulted from the trading incident, Naratil said: "It would be hard to determine a percentage."

He added: "If you lose $2.3 billion more than you would otherwise, then you're more likely to lose more staff," Naratil said.

UBS had already announced in August it was shedding 3,500 staff as part of a broader cost cutting plan, but Naratil said that "it did not mean we were limited to cost reductions that were tied to that specific program."

The investment bank's bonus pool was also cut by 60 percent, he said, adding however that the rogue trading loss was not the sole reason for this.

The trial continues. ($1 = 0.9341 Swiss francs)

Family offering $50,000 and their home for safe return of dog | KDVR ...

WARREN, Texas ? If you saw Charlie Parker at his home in Warren, Texas, you might think he?s thoroughly enjoying his retirement. But something is missing.

That would be his chocolate lab, Sir, who went missing from his home on Sept. 15. Parker was mowing the lawn, and when he came back to look for him, he was gone.

?I?ve been looking for him every day since then,? Parker said. ?I beat myself up every day. If I?d have done this. If I?d have done that. Maybe he?d still be here.?

Parker said the loss is much more than just losing a pet.

?Me and my wife have never had any children,? Parker said. ?That dog is replacement for a child.?

For five years, the dog was never more than a few steps behind Parker.

?He?d jump up in the bed every morning and we?d get up and have a new adventure,? Parker said. ?It was another exciting day to be alive. Life doesn?t mean a whole lot without him.?

You can find the flyers all around Warren ? Parker is offering a $50,000 to anyone who brings his dog home safe. He said he?s willing to give up anything except his wife or his horse to make it happen.

?We?ve raised $50,000 and now we?ve got the house up for sale,? Parker said. ?If I never got to go on another hunting trip or fishing trip or vacation to get him back, that?d be fine. He just plays such a big role in our lives.?

Leveraging the cloud also helps service providers stay competitive ...

Service providers like iStreamPlanet are leveraging new distribution technologies to keep up with the times.

Current hardware and software alone can't sufficiently scale to meet the growing demand for more content, longer viewing hours and high-quality viewing experiences across the growing variety of display devices.

While major broadcasters have struggled with the daunting task of having to simultaneously target a myriad of display devices for their content in order to stay competitive (and generate new revenue), so too have the service providers that are helping them do that. Moving to the cloud has become a natural evolution and a key component of staying in business ? for these companies and their clients.

Indeed, encoding a single live stream for the Internet has evolved into transcoding that single stream into dozens of different file formats so that consumers everywhere can view them.? at the end of the day, creating a seamless and compelling experience for the consumer is what matters most ??to everyone involved.

One such service provider (and there are several), iStreamPlanet, based in Las Vegas, says it has worked hard to keep up with the times. In 2000, Mio Babic, founder, president and CEO of the company, began working with media companies to bring live events like the Olympics to computer screens in a compelling way. Today his company has moved much of its audio and video file processing activities to remotely based data centers (the cloud) to keep up.

?Current technologies and products simply cannot scale to meet the growing demand for more content, longer viewing hours and high-quality viewing experiences across a plethora of devices,? Babic said. ?In working with some of the largest brands in the digital media industry to produce some of the highest-profile online video experiences in history, we've seen firsthand how expensive, cumbersome and complex it is to keep up with digital proliferation. It is with those experiences and customers in mind that we are developing the next generation of media workload products and services.?

This move to the cloud has allowed iStreamPlanet to work with more customers in a much broader capacity. Babic?s strategy of offering the best products and technology and not committing to any single technology provider is also a secret to its success. Remaining technology-agnostic keeps the company current and able to offer the best tools for the application at hand.

The company?also has been helped by the emergence of distribution infrastructure providers like CloudSigma, which has long-standing relationships with the Switch SuperNAP datacenter (located in Las Vegas and considered one of the largest such data centers in the world) and in the European-based Interxion datacenter (London). iStream Planet designs the system and makes technology recommendations, while CloudSigma implements the connections necessary to make it happen.

?Without the cloud, media companies would have to spend a lot more money on OpEx and additional hardware, which, frankly, no one wants to do,? said Robin Cole, vice president of Products & Services at iStreamPlanet. ?The cloud allows [broadcasters] a much better level of fidelity in terms of scalability and control over the environment, than hardware has, to this point. So the cloud ends up being a great way to scale a business and save money.?

Similarly, offering such remote processing services has also allowed iStreamPlanet to save money relating to its operations, which it says it then passes on to its customers.

?As a service provider, we understand that we have to stay competitive in our pricing and our engineering expertise,? Cole said. ?There?s a lot of competition out there, so offering reliable, secure service at a reasonable price is key to our success as well. But we also feel, with our heritage in digital broadcasting, we are uniquely qualified to do the job.?

Cole joined iStreamPlanet less than a year ago, after years at Microsoft, which was an iStream Planet customer. Among a number of clients, iStream Planet helped NBC stream content during past Summer and Winter Olympic games using Microsoft?s SilverLight technology.

?When I joined the company, what I found was that iStream Planet was growing along with industry needs,? she said. ?And what the industry needed was a comprehensive platform that could accommodate different types of business models and video streaming scenarios. On the surface, media companies like NBC, Turner Broadcasting, AMC Networks and?the United States Olympic Committee all had different requirements, but we?ve found that we could accommodate all of them with a similar cloud-based solution. They needed to produce complex live events that required multicamera, multiplatform distribution capability on a global basis. We needed a fast and easy way to do that.?

One of the cloud-based services iStream Planet will soon offer ? thanks to its CloudSigma partnership ? is called Director 5, a video-on-demand, media-processing workflow that can scale to support up to 1000 concurrent encode and transcode jobs. Director 5 leverages the latest in virtualization technologies running on high-capacity hardware that, the company says, are intelligently provisioned and performance-optimized as needed, and then automatically removed when no longer needed. So customers pay only for what they use.

The company said it will also market what it calls an ?advanced metadata services framework? that leverages device-customizable Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) and TV/VOD metadata, authentication, authorization, and ID federation for live and on-demand streaming of content to over-the-top (OTT) devices. AMSF gets content owners and distributors up and running quickly and allows them to accommodate all types of IP-connected devices ? including smartphones and tablets ? as well as and OTT devices like game consoles and set-top boxes.

Both Director 5 and AMSF will be commercially available later this year.

?We?ve been talking about the traditional broadcast and the digital media worlds coming together for a while now, and today, that is finally happening in a very real and meaningful way. The digital media side is clearly not making the money that traditional broadcast TV is, yet the Internet and mobile video consumption are not going away. We all know that.?

Fundation Friday - Become Beauty Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation

Pink Sith: Fundation Friday - Become Beauty Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation - Review, Pictures, Swatches

Fundation Friday - Become Beauty Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation - Review, Pictures, Swatches

Welcome back to Foundation Friday. ?This week I bring you a foundation from Down Under?.No You SICK-O's not that. I mean Australia.

Become Beauty has a huge range of products including skin care and makeup. ?They have a few different lines of skin care, but the Makeup line is limited, simple and straightforward. ?I was sent a tube of the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation. ?This is a multi-purpose foundation with 30 SPF UVB/UVA protection. It provides translucent coverage in a universal shade (more on that in a second), it helps protect, firm and tone the skin with anti-aging ingredients. The foundation contains?Zinc and Titanium, natural sunscreens,?DMAE?Extract which is an antioxidant and soothes the skin,?Mica, which reduces the appearance of lines and silica which gives a flawless look to the coverage.

Guess what. ?My skin color was not in that "universal" shade range. ?But I soldiered on and tested it, so I could at least tell you how it works. I actually wore it for 2 straight days while I was home on the weekend. (I don't really care if someone at the grocery store sees me with foundation that doesn't match my skin tone.) Since my weekends consist of doing nothing but indulging Darthypie and catching up on lost sleep I was happy to test this out. ?As I said I wore this foundation for two days and getting it to look natural on my pale complexion was a bit of a challenge, but I figured out, on day 2, that if I applied it to the middle of my face, blended out and then used another BB cream on the outside of my face and blend inwards, this foundation could look pretty decent.

I know what you are thinking. ?"Wait a second. How can you review a product after only 2 days of use. ?Don't you normally take weeks to test a product?" ?Yes. I do normally take weeks to test a product. ?I'll tell you why I only took 2 days in just a moment. ?But first...

You all are probably wondering about the color. ?So here it is.

Yup. It's pretty dark and orangey/yellow for me. ?I think darker skin tones would benefit from this much more than I did. ?I do not like that this foundation only comes in one color. ?That's just not cool.

As for how it holds up. Actually quite nicely. ?Applied all over my face with primer on day one the finish was slightly matte and natural looking (despite the color) ?My skin did seem slightly toned and firmer when I was wearing this?but I stress that it was a slight improvement. ?The foundation did a good job of covering up my pores and not settling into fine lines. ?It looked pretty Awesome actually, despite the poor color match. It seemed to fade on my oily skin after 4-5 hours, but that is to be expected with any foundation touted as a translucent finish. ?By the time I figured out how to apply it with a BB cream closer to my skin tone I looked pretty amazing. ?I was ready to recommend this foundation for darker skin tones right away.

But then it happened. ?I started to break out. ?I started to break out in painful cystic like acne in areas of my face that never break out. ?It was then I FINALLY looked at the ingredients and I saw that one word that strikes dread into my cold black heart. ?Cyclopentasiloxane. Yup. That dreaded silicone that is in countless makeup products. ?It's not typical to react the way I do to?Cyclopentasiloxane, but it is possible. ?Yup. ?This is one of the few silicones that makes me break out in huge hurty cystic acne. ?It sucks, because some products that are really awesome contain this ingredient. ?But, like I said, my reaction is not typical and most people can, and are, currently wearing this silicone on a daily basis with no issues what so ever. ?And that is why I didn't test this foundation for more than 2 days.

So do you NEED this? ?I know I certainly do not. ?You might need this. ?If you don't have issues with?Cyclopentasiloxane and you aren't?any lighter than a MAC NC20 or Darker than a MAC NC35. ?(A MAC NC40 might be able to make this work.) this could work for you. That's a pretty narrow window of skin tones if you ask me but the majority of the US falls into this range. ? Perhaps as Become Beauty expands they will also expand their range of colors for the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation. ?That way women of color and non color (like myself) can also benefit from this product. ?However, I will never benefit from it as long as?Cyclopentasiloxane is in it. ?It's not fair to condemn a product just because?Cyclopentasiloxane is the main ingredient. I get that. I know my reaction is not typical. ?

So what am I going to do with a tube of Mineral foundation that is skin suicide for me? ?I'm going to give it to my buddy that doesn't have this reaction to?Cyclopentasiloxane and has much darker skin than I do. ?But what about you dear reader? ?Perhaps you too are yearning for this foundation because you have the ideal skin coloring and no issues with?Cyclopentasiloxane. ?Just because I personally didn't like a product for non typical skin reaction I experienced doesn't mean that YOU won't like it. ?I get that we are all special snow flakes and that everyone is different. ?That's why I agreed to hold a giveaway!

The generous people at Become have not only sent me a tube of the Firm + Tone Mineral Foundation to review, but they gave given me one to give away as well! ?Sorry tho, this is open to US residents only. ?Just enter using the rafflecopter widget below. ?You can earn extra entries by liking me on Facebook, following me on Twitter, visiting the Become Beauty website, and more.

Good luck to everyone entering!

Don't Bury your Estate Plan with You - The Carmel Valley Life

Tips to avoid loss of important documents.

Carmel Valley San Diego Community | Christine Ellingsen | Reams of PaperImagine your family trying to search stacks of paper in your home to find your estate plan. ?In those stacks, they find nothing but old bills. ?They turn to your rolodex and find a business card for an attorney. ?They call that office in hopes it was your estate planning attorney who can guide them to your documents. ?That office is no longer in business. ?What do they do now?

An estate plan is private. ?Your trust does not get recorded with the county. ?This means you need to take efforts to protect yourself and your documents so they can be found by your family or successor agents when the time comes that they need to act on your behalf.

  • Keep an electronic copy of your documents. ?Your original paper copies may get destroyed in a fire, or lost during a move, so it is important to have electronic access to your documents. ?Scan all the originals into an electronic copy. ?Upload these documents to a secure document storage program (inquire with your attorney for suggestions). ?Send the electronic copy to your family and/or successor agents.
  • Communication is key. ?You may not want to provide your family and/or successor agents with copies of your documents. ?If that is the case, inform your successor agents where the original estate plan is stored. ?Store the estate plan somewhere in your home that is both safe and easily accessible, such as a fire-proof cabinet or a secured drawer where you keep your records in your home. ?Also provide your successor agents with the contact information of the law firm that drafted the plan. ?Inquire with your law firm as to their record keeping policy to determine whether or not a copy of your estate plan will remain in their files.
  • Prefer more privacy? ?Lock it up. ?Only if you have made arrangements for your safety-deposit box to be immediately accessible by your successor agents should you keep your original documents in that box. Remember, your documents will only be accessible during bank hours, and only by that person you give a key or authorization to. ?If this is your preference, consult with your attorney about funding your safety deposit box into your trust.

Prevent your family from a treasure hunt by providing or communicating the existence of these important documents to them.

Anonymous at Scientology in Los Angeles- Vincent Diamante

The Internet receives a remarkable amount of credit for contemporary political developments. This is true of both revolutionary and mainstream movements, from the Arab Spring to Howard Dean?s presidential campaign. At the same time, widespread commentary on the Internet?s mobilizing capacity has generated numerous and ranging assertions about the effects of online organizing. Does it foster extremist ideologies? Is it inherently democratic? Do its effects vary by generation??

Gabriella Coleman enters this debate by tracing the emergence of the online collective Anonymous. The group?s practice of trolling the Internet was initially animated by mischief, with the aim of pulling off message board?coordinated pranks that generate ?LOLs? (laugh out louds in digital parlance). Out of this freewheeling ?spirit of lulz,? participants adapted their collective aims and coordinated tactics to take on a range of activist causes and campaigns. Galvanized by the refusal of MasterCard and PayPal to process donations to Wiki ? Leaks, by state repression during Arab Spring revolutions across the Middle East, and by various acts of corporate online cen sorship, the collective has increasingly been challenging major political, religious, and economic institutions. With the attention generating success of these operations, Anonymous politics has come to resemble a digital form of ?social banditry,? and its hacking operations increasingly work in tandem with other forms of political mobilization such as street protest.?

Amid these changes, Coleman suggests that the group?s activism has maintained a collective approach and, as its name suggests, a deep ethic of anonymity. Though its initiatives continue to arise out of the ad hoc ?spirit of lulz,? Anonymous operations depend heavily on coordinated action for their success, and thrive from decentralized decision-making. And although hackers push for transparency as a check to institutional power, the group insists on its own opacity, collectively enforcing the non-identity of its members and even going so far as to ?z-line? individuals who take individual credit for group actions by banning them from certain servers.?

Because the Internet is a highly contested infrastructure, hackers have the capacity to wield significant power thanks to ?their closeness to the machine? (512). Working against the depiction of these practices as part of a misfit subculture, Coleman?s online ethnography provides a great deal of insight into a politics that, through its anonymous collective action, may represent the most promising aspect of the Internet and its role in contemporary social and political life.

Mexico captures Zetas cartel capo 'El Taliban': navy

The Mexican navy brought a suspected leader of the brutal Zetas drug cartel before news cameras Thursday, after catching the capo amid a violent rift within the powerful criminal gang.

The 42-year-old Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known as "Z-50" and "El Taliban," stood stone-faced as marines presented him to the press, wearing a checkered long-sleeve shirt and a bullet-proof vest with two other captured suspects.

Marines detained Velazquez Caballero on Wednesday in a house in the central city of San Luis Potosi, from where he directed operations in four central and northern Mexican states, the navy said.

He was on the list of the 37 most wanted drug lords -- with a $2.3 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

The arrest shed light on a feud within the Zetas, with the navy saying Velazquez Caballero had defied one of the cartel's bosses.

But while the Zetas are divided, the arrest will likely not disrupt the cartel's operations because it is set up like a franchise with cells spread out in various states, analysts said.

"It's important, because El Taliban was a violent and cruel figure, but it does not weaken the Zetas," said Ricardo Ravelo, author of the book "Five Stories of the Zetas."

Velazquez Caballero had allegedly been the Zetas' regional capo in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and Coahuila states since 2007, said navy spokesman Jose Luis Vergara, a vice admiral.

"Some sources say he challenged Miguel Trevino Morales, alias 'Z-40,' starting a struggle for control of San Luis Potosi," Vergara said.

The power struggle is believed to have led to the execution of 14 of Velazquez Caballero's followers in San Luis Potosi in August, he added.

Mexico has been in the grip of a brutal drug war that has left some 60,000 people dead since the launch of a military crackdown against the cartels in 2006.

Authorities have attributed a series of murders near the US border in recent months to disputes among the Zetas.

Two weeks ago, 16 bodies were found in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Nine of the bodies were hanging from a bridge, with messages from Zetas-linked gangs accusing each other of treason.

A navy source, who requested anonymity, told AFP that Velazquez Caballero had approached Gulf Cartel leaders to seek an alliance against Trevino Morales.

The weekly magazine Proceso has reported that Velazquez Caballero had posted street signs in the north and online videos accusing Trevino Morales of betraying some of his lieutenants and ratting them out to the authorities.

US authorities say the Zetas, who are led by Trevino Morales and Heriberto Lazcano, are one of Mexico's most powerful gangs alongside the Pacific region's Sinaloa federation, led by fugitive Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Much of the northeast is in the clutches of the Zetas cartel, which was founded by former Mexican special forces soldiers who went rogue and are known for decapitating and dismembering their enemies.

The Zetas were originally hired as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel, but turned on their employers and have fought them for control of lucrative drug routes to the United States.

The navy struck a major blow against the Gulf Cartel this month, arresting its suspected kingpin, Jorge Eduardo Costilla, alias "El Coss," and another senior leader, Mario Cardenas Guillen, known as "El Gordo."

The weakening of the Gulf Cartel and Zetas infighting could clear a path for Guzman to grab the northeast coast, analysts said.

"This is great news for El Chapo. I'm sure he's sitting back and laughing right now," said Sylvia Longmire, a former US Air Force special agent and author of "Cartel: The Coming Invasion of Mexico's Drug Wars."

"I'm sure El Chapo can work this to his advantage," she told AFP. "And I'm sure he's going to try."
