(AP) ? Fiscal cliff? Recession? Not in Asia, where the first countries to see 2013 dawn will enthusiastically welcome the new year.

Increasingly democratic Myanmar will have a public countdown for the first time. Jakarta plans a huge street party befitting Indonesia's powering economy.

In Sydney, eager revelers camped over Sunday night on the shores of the harbor to get the best vantage points as 1.5 million are expected to see the fireworks show centered on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

In Hong Kong, this year's 12.5 million Hong Kong dollar ($1.6 million) fireworks display was being billed by organizers as the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city. Police expect as many as 100,000 people to watch, local news reports said.

The buoyant economies of the Asia-Pacific are prepared to party with renewed optimism despite the so-called fiscal cliff threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economy of Europe.

Celebrations were planned around the world later Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands expected to fill Times Square in New York City to watch the drop of a Waterford crystal-studded ball.

One day after dancing in the snow to celebrate the first anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander, North Koreans were preparing Monday to mark the arrival of the new year, marked as "Juche 102" on North Korean calendars - the number referring to 102 years since the birth of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung. "Juche" means self-reliance, the North Korean ideology of independence promoted by Kim, who was born in 1912. His grandson now rules North Korea.

In New Delhi, the festive mood was marred by the death Saturday of a young rape victim.

Several hotels, clubs and residents associations in Indian capital decided to cancel planned festivities and asked people to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim whose plight sparked public rallies for women's safety.

"Let there be no New Year celebrations across the country. It will be a major tribute to the departed soul," said Praveen Khandelwal, the secretary-general of the Confederation of All India Traders, an umbrella group of traders who run shops and businesses across the country.

In a field in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, workers early Monday were testing a giant digital countdown screen with the backdrop of the revered Shwedagon pagoda.

Arranged by local Forever Media group and Index Creative Village, a Thai major event organizer, the celebration will be the first public New Year countdown in Myanmar, a country ruled for almost five decades by military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings.

"We are planning this public new year event because we want residents of Yangon to enjoy the public countdown like in other countries," said Win Thura Hlaing, managing director of Forever Blossom company, a subsidiary of Forever Media.

With live music performances by singers and celebrities, colorful light shows, food stalls, fireworks and other events at the venue, the countdown is expected to draw 50,000 people, Win Thura Hlaing said.

Jakarta's street party will center on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) main thoroughfare closed to all traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers were erecting 16 large stages along the normally car-clogged, 8-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to Indonesians.

Spirits in the capital have been further raised by the election of a new, populist governor, who is pledging action in tackling the city's massive infrastructure problems.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said about 1.5 million spectators were expected to line the harbor to watch the 6.6 million Australian dollar ($6.9 million) fireworks display, while another 2 million Australians among a population of 22 million would watch it on television.

"This is really putting Australia on the map in terms of welcoming people to the new year," Moore told reporters at the harbor before the event.

Thousands lined the harbor shore in festive crowds under a blue summer sky by late afternoon, their number undiminished by Australian government warnings that the Washington deadlock on the U.S. debt crisis was partly to blame for a slowing Australian economy.

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue is host for the event.

Florida tourist Melissa Sjostedt was among the thousands gathered near a southern pylon of the bridge. She said seeing the fireworks would fulfill an ambition started a decade ago when she read about them in a National Geographic magazine.

"Ever since that, I've always wanted to see this for real, live, in person," the 30-year-old said.

Despite the somber mood in the Philippines due to devastation from a recent typhoon, a key problem for authorities remained how to prevent revelers from setting off illegal huge firecrackers ? including some labeled "Goodbye Philippines" and "Bin Laden" ? that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year, many of them children.

A government scare tactic, which involved doctors displaying brutal-looking surgical scalpels used for amputations of firecracker blast victims, has not fully worked in the past so health officials came up with a novel idea: Go Gangnam style.

A government health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean viral star PSY and danced to the tune of his Youtube-hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said. "We've asked kids and adults to stay away from big firecrackers and just dance the Gangnam and they're doing it."

The number of firecracker injuries has gone down since the campaign was launched early this month.

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese new year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

"The positive thing is that people are very optimistic, therefore it will have a very strong drive on the economic recovery. We expect the stock market will do well, the property market will do well," Lo said.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: UGA ready to defend Nebraska's Martinez; FSU's Werner went from German unknown to superstar in Tallahassee

German product Bjoern Werner came to FSU raw, but he?s since emerged as one of the team?s most polished defensive players.

Notre Dame head coach puts players on strict 11 p.m. curfew while preparing for BCS title game in Miami

SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says the top-ranked Fighting Irish will have an early curfew every night they are in Miami preparing to play second-ranked Alabama for the national title.

Kelly told the media Saturday he usually has a 2 a.m. curfew the first night or two on bowl trips so players can have fun. He says the curfew in Miami will be 11 p.m. every night, saying he has told the Irish (12-0) to approach the game as a business trip.

The Irish are seeking their first national championship since 1988. Kelly says the Irish had a physical practice Saturday and will have another Sunday. The Irish head to Miami on Wednesday.

The Irish play Alabama (12-1) in the BCS title game Jan. 7.

ORLANDO ? Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive end Garrison Smith and quarterback Aaron Murray took part in a Capital One Bowl news conference Saturday.

The coaches and players agreed preparations have been going well and that they have been enjoying their time in Orlando. However, they are ready to play the game against Nebraska and its dangerous quarterback Taylor Martinez.

?The players have been doing a good job of preparing for the game, working when it?s time to work, and they?ve been able to enjoy the parks too,? Grantham said. ?They understand they need to play well and get ready to play a tough, physical game against a talented offense. We?re looking forward to an exciting game (Tuesday).?

The Nebraska rushing attack includes the dual-threat Martinez, who tallied 973 yards on the ground while passing for 2,667 yards and 21 touchdowns.

?We?re going to do our best against him (Martinez) because he?s a great player,? said Smith. ?We?ll have to be disciplined and play as a team. Everybody will have to do their job because he is hard to contain.?

When talk turned to the Cornhusker defense, Bobo said he sees a veteran team that features eight seniors and three juniors in their starting 11.

?Nebraska?s defense plays well together, and they are like us in coming off a disappointing loss in their conference championship game,? he said. ?I know both teams will be ready to compete.?

Murray said he hopes to send the Bulldog seniors out with a victory, and personally he?d like to get his first bowl win, too.

?We?ve got tremendous leadership on this team, a great group of senior leaders and a few juniors, and it?s been a couple of years since we?ve won a bowl game,? said Murray. ?We have a chance to crack the top five with a victory so we?re making sure we stay focused. I?ve yet to win a bowl game, and I?ll do what I can to lead the offense. We?ve got a good game plan, and we?re looking to be balanced and make plays. We didn?t make enough plays as an offense in our last two bowl games.?

Currently with an 11-2 record, Georgia is aiming to become only the third team in school history to register at least 12 wins in a season. Vince Dooley?s national championship team in 1980 went 12-0 while the 2002 Bulldogs under Mark Richt finished 13-1. Both of those squads won the SEC title and a Sugar Bowl.

?We have a chance to win 22 games in two years, and in the history of Georgia football, that hasn?t happened very often. So that would be unique plus there a chance to finish in the top five,? Grantham added. ?It?s important to send our seniors out the right way and for the guys coming back too. The seniors are a special group. The fun part of my job is to see how they?ve gotten mentally and physically tougher over the past few years.?

The Bulldogs face the Cornhuskers on Tuesday at 1:08 p.m. in a game that will be televised by ABC.

FSU'S WARNER HAS NFL SCOUTS DROOLING:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ? Bjoern Werner is rare.

The Florida State star defensive end is a married college student, already going on three years of wedded bliss. He's a German-born All-American. He ended the regular season with 13 sacks, second-most in the nation.

To think his story started in Berlin, thanks to a long-lost friend named Mirko and some "weird guys" at his school who were tossing a football around.

"And I played Madden," he said, referring to the popular video game.

He might be in next year's version of Madden, at this rate. Werner and the Seminoles face Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl on Tuesday night, and it's widely believed that this will be his last college game. He knows whether or not he'll soon be declaring a year early for the NFL draft, saying Saturday that he and his wife have made their decision.

That is, unless the decision gets revisited.

"If her mind changes," Werner said, "mine might change, too."

Florida State's opponents for next season surely won't mind if Werner decides to head to the NFL soon after his rapid rise. His introduction to the game was basically flag football in his native country after he got too big to keep playing "futbol." Werner decided to give this game a shot after seeing some schoolmates throwing a ball instead of kicking one.

He's lost touch with them all.

So they might not even know how they helped him begin a journey that seems pointed toward NFL riches.

"This is everything I could dream right now, all this hype and not just about me individually," Werner said. "I'm so happy that we're in the Orange Bowl. This was my goal to be on the big stage; that's why I came to Florida State. I'm so happy that we are here. Hopefully we can leave this thing with a win."

If they do ? and the Seminoles are two-touchdown favorites ? it would be Florida State's first 12-win season since 1999.

Werner is a huge reason for that success.

The Seminoles allow an average of 15.1 points, sixth-best in the nation. At 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, he has more sacks this season than he had in his first two years of college combined ? and did so while facing a steady stream of double-teams that typically didn't do enough to slow him down.

"You have certain players that you can give them a certain amount of information, but they can only apply so much, so you have to be careful on who and what you give to certain players," said Florida State defensive coach D.J. Eliot, who is joining Kentucky's staff after the bowl. "But Bjoern is one of those players that he can take in anything you give him. You know what I mean? And he can apply it in the game.

"So he never ceases to amaze me on how much he can improve, and he's done that his whole career."

Which, frankly, didn't start all that long ago.

Werner started playing flag football in his native Berlin, then went to prep school in Salisbury, Conn., after realizing he had tons of natural skill. When colleges came recruiting, they took a look at his size and told him he'd be better suited at defensive tackle or offensive line or tight end. Werner didn't like any of those options.

Florida State coaches saw him play basketball, noted his athleticism and said he could play defensive end.

Smart move.

"It's fun catching the ball," Werner said. "But you can't let loose like that."

When he lets loose Tuesday, he'll likely have Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch in mind.

Lynch entered the weekend 38th nationally in yards passing this season and third nationally in yards rushing ? his total of 1,771 in that department being 500 more than any other quarterback in the country.

Chances are, if they meet during the Orange Bowl, it'll be at high speed.

"The guy has a motor," Lynch said. "That's the biggest thing that stands out. He never takes a play off. He's always going at it. Sometimes he'll get cut-blocked. He'll get right back up and make a tackle. It's pretty impressive. He'll run sideline to sideline and chase guys down. He's probably one of the most complete football players we'll play against."

Werner said he would wait a few days after the Orange Bowl to announce his decision about next season, though it would count as a massive surprise ? especially since the Seminoles will have a new defensive coordinator in 2013 ? if he stuck around.

He has big plans to help the American version of football grow in Germany, eventually. He thought it was funny that his likeness adorned some buses that were decorated in Florida State colors and roaming the roads of South Florida in recent days to promote the bowl game. And even though some say he's a top-five draft pick, Werner would rather tell you about what he still has to work on than what his strengths are.

"I worked hard," Werner said. "It paid off."

FEATURE: Pingtung villages? Christmas parade a hit

Most people may not have expected it, but for residents in Pingtung County?s two small villages of Wanjin (??) and Chishan (??) ? with a combined population of about 5,000 ? Christmas is the most important festivity of the year, since about 80 percent of the villagers are Catholics.

One after another, fireworks were shot into the sky as Christmas songs were sung and a carriage, drawn by men in Santa Claus outfits and carrying two children dressed up as Joseph and the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus, passed through the crowd. Church volunteers led the way, while onlookers took pictures of the parade.

In the past, the carriage was drawn by a cow. However, as the number of visitors grows, the church has decided to have people draw the carriage because a cow would be easily scared by the crowd.

?Merry Christmas. May peace be upon you,? the paraders and the onlookers said to each other, with smiles on their faces.

Many may have thought that parades on Christmas Eve only took place in predominantly Christian countries, but the residents of the two small villages neighboring Wanluan Township (??) have celebrated Christmas for well over a century.

?We have just celebrated the 151st anniversary of the founding of the Wanjing Basilica, and we?ve always had a parade since the founding of the church here to express and share our joy for the birth of Christ,? said Pan Ching-yu (???), a priest at the basilica.

Prior to the parade, at the entrance of Chishan, a group of priests and young volunteers had traveled to another village named Jiazuo (??), about 2km south of Chishan, to pick up the children dressed up as Joseph and Mary holding baby Jesus in a reconstructed stable, and paraded them through Chishan and Wanjin villages.

The parade ended at the basilica, where a mass was held.

The parade symbolizes the villagers welcoming Jesus and is also to spread the faith, said Baru, a priest of the Paiwan tribe.

?There are seven neighborhoods in Wanjin and Chishan, plus Jiazuo Village, so a total of eight communities in the surrounding areas of Wanjin Basilica take turns to stage the Nativity,? he said. ?Representatives from the eight neighborhoods hold meetings to make the decision.?

Pan explained why there was such a concentration of Catholics in the two villages.

?The two villages were historically severely impoverished, but things began to change when the Spanish missionary Father Fernando Sainz arrived in Wanjin in 1861,? Pan said. ?He made great efforts trying to help the villagers economically, while also mediating ethnic conflict. Through his acts of benevolence, he gained the trust of the people and a large number of people were converted to Christianity.?

For instance, many villagers at the time had to sell their land for cash, and without land, they would not be able to make a living, Pan said.

?So what Father Sainz did was purchase the land with church funds and continue to allow the original landowners to work their land,? he said.

Ethnic conflicts were also a serious problem because Wanjin and Chishan are Hoklo-speaking villages surrounded by Hakka-speaking and Paiwan Aboriginal communities, Pan added.

In fact, although Wanjin and Chishan are Hoklo-speaking villages, the majority of the villagers are descendants of the Makataos, a Pingpu Aboriginal tribe.

Christmas celebrations have long attracted Catholics from across the country and promotion by the Pingtung County Government since last year has made it a popular event even for non-Christians.

Expanding the Cancer Gene Pool | dailyRx

(dailyRx News) Genes are at the heart of a number of cancers. When cancer-promoting genes are identified, they can sometimes become targets for new drugs.

After working with people in Asia, researchers have discovered three new gene variants that are involved in colorectal cancer. New drugs may possibly be developed to attack these faulty molecules and improve treatment.

"Tell your doctor about your family?s cancer history."

Only about 6 percent of the colorectal cancer cases in the world have a genetic link. People who have inherited these genes are at higher risk of developing the disease than are people without the genes.

Several gene variants have been discovered in previous studies. However, these studies have been limited to European and Caucasian groups.

"Looking at different ethnic groups is important because the genetic structures can be different enough that variants identified in one population do not explain risk in other populations," said study senior author, Wei Zheng, MD, PhD, MPH, professor of cancer research at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.

Dr. Zheng and colleagues established the Asia Colorectal Cancer Consortium in 2009 to search for gene variants in people from China, Korea and Japan.

The scientists used what?s called a ?genomic-wide association study? to look for altered genes in 2,098 people with colorectal cancer and 5,749 people without the disease. At first, 64 variants were detected. That number was then narrowed to four, with three of the variants linked to colorectal cancer risks in a study involving Europeans.

"The findings from this study are relevant to both Asian and European populations," Dr. Zheng said in a statement.

He said that this study illustrates the importance of including diverse populations in seeking genetic answers for diseases ? including colorectal cancer.

This study was published December 23 in an Advanced Online Publication in Nature Genetics.

BEIJING | Sun Dec 30, 2012 10:25am EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - Three populous Chinese regions plan to relax restrictions on the children of workers from rural areas trying to enter university-track high schools, China National Radio reported on Sunday, in an apparent response to protests over discriminatory practices.

The planned changes come too late to help a teenager whose plight has become a cause c?l?bre among activists pressing for reform of China's household registration, or hukou, regime.

Chinese high school students can only take university entrance exams where they are registered, a stipulation that effectively locks out the children of migrant workers in cities.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese have moved to cities from rural areas over the past three decades, but most migrants are still treated as second-class citizens without the same access to education, housing or health insurance as registered urban residents.

Reformists had seized on the case of Zhan Haite, 15, the daughter of migrants who had been raised in Shanghai but was ineligible to attend a university-track high school there. Her case triggered protests in Beijing and Shanghai this month, while her father was detained for several days for campaigning to secure education rights in Shanghai.

The rules as announced still do not treat the children of migrants as equals of city residents with legal registration.

"It's not ideal. They have just made the regulations more detailed, not changed the underlying situation," Zhan said from her home in Shanghai. The new criteria were so strict that she, and others like her, would still be ineligible, she said.

"I bet only 5 percent of the kids would meet the new requirements."

Beijing and Shanghai as well as Guangdong Province, whose Pearl River Delta factories are a magnet for migrants, will phase in access to the higher-education exams for students living within their borders, China National Radio reported.

But in practice, academically gifted migrant children will still face discrimination.

From 2016, Guangdong will allow migrant children to sit the exams and apply to university on an equal footing with legal residents.

Beijing and Shanghai plan to relax admission rules for vocational-track schools and in some cases open the door to university education to students who have first graduated from a vocational school program.

Migrant children may take the university exam in Beijing from 2013 and in Shanghai from 2014, but their university applications will still be processed in their legal hometown.

The children of migrants long resident in Beijing already have some rights to attend elementary school, but in practice they are often kept out by high fees, red tape and complicated admission procedures.

Here's another 'fiscal cliff' worry: tax-filing delays

With some investments already feeling the pain of the looming cliff, millions of Americans are at risk of being affected. The first to consider is the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts, according to CNBC's Jackie Deangelis.

By Allison Linn, TODAY

If you?re the type of person who likes to file your income tax return as soon as possible, then you?ve got another reason to be frustrated by the fiscal cliff stalemate in Washington, D.C.

Most of the tax changes being discussed as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations would go into effect in 2013, meaning that taxpayers would first have to account for them when they went to file those tax returns in early 2014.

But a handful of the provisions under discussion could affect Americans? 2012 taxes. The down-to-the-wire negotiations in the nation's capital could leave the IRS scrambling to adopt the changes in its systems, delaying the agency?s ability to accept some people?s returns.

?Congress oftentimes waits until the last minute to pass legislation, and then that in a turn affects the IRS,? said Bob Meighan, vice president with tax software provider TurboTax.

That's definitely been the case this time around. Just a few days before the end of the year, Congress has not been able to come to an agreement over a series of tax increases that are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1. President Barack Obama said Friday that he was "modestly optimistic" a deal could still be reached to avert going over the so-called fiscal cliff.?

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven T. Miller has already warned that there could be serious filing delays if Congress doesn?t provide a patch for the Alternative Minimum Tax. An IRS spokesman said Friday that the agency did not have any further information beyond the warnings Miller gave to lawmakers in a letter earlier this month.

The AMT is a provision in the tax code that was designed to ensure that wealthy taxpayers have to?pay at least a minimum amount of taxes. It was never indexed for inflation, however, so Congress has had to provide temporary fixes over the years to ensure that lower-income taxpayers aren?t affected.

That hasn?t happened yet this year because of the fiscal cliff stalemate. In the letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp earlier this month, Miller, the acting IRS commissioner, warned that if Congress doesn?t provide a patch this year, then the IRS would have to make significant programming changes to account for that.

?In that event, given the magnitude and complexity of the changes needed, I want to reiterate that most taxpayers may not be able to file their 2012 tax returns until late in March of 2013, or even later,? Miller wrote in the Dec. 19 letter.

Miller also warned that as many as 30 million additional taxpayers could be subject to the AMT if a patch isn?t put in place.

For now, Miller said the IRS is acting as if Congress will provide an AMT patch.

Meighan, of TurboTax, said his company also has prepared its software as if a patch will be in place. But he said the company also is ready to?switch gears quickly if it must.

Meighan said a few other provisions under discussion as part of the fiscal cliff negotiation could affect a minority of taxpayers in 2012. Those include a deduction teachers get for school supplies they purchase for their classrooms and a tuition and fees deduction that applies to some students.

"It's really gotten to a point now where you have the ideological divisions in the country overlapped now with the partisan divisions," said CNBC's Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood.

The IRS has had to ask people to delay filing their returns before. In 2010, Congress passed last-minute tax law changes on Dec. 17. As a result, the IRS said it wouldn?t be able to accept returns with itemized deductions until February of 2011 because it needed time to adjust its systems.

If people are forced to wait to file their tax returns, that would also mean a delay in getting tax refunds. Roberton Williams, a senior fellow with the Tax Policy Center, said that in turn could have some effect on the economy because many people count on that money to pay off debt or buy big-ticket items.

If the AMT isn?t patched at all, he noted, that would be an even bigger economic hit because some taxpayers wouldn?t get their expected refund at all.

?That will have a major effect on the economy,? Williams said. ?It will be pulling a lot of money out of the economy that people are expecting.?

Despite the Congressional deadlock, experts say they are still assuming a deal will be made to put the patch in place.

?For most people, come 2013 they?ll be able to file their taxes, they?ll get their refund and life goes on,? Meighan said.

When do you usually file your taxes?

The Salem Witch Society | Crime Fiction Lover

Written by KN Shields ? There have been numerous blends of supernatural fantasy and crime fiction in recent years, but don?t worry, this book takes place in the matter-of-fact world of the New England freelance detective Perceval Grey, and deputy marshal Archie Lean. They?re based in Portland, the state capital of Maine, and the year is 1892. Things get off to a grisly start when Lean is called out to a crime scene ? and quite a scene it is. The mutilated and bitten (yes, bitten) body of a prostitute is found in a workshop in the poor part of town. Her corpse has been pinned to the ground with a pitchfork and configured into the five points of a satanic pentagram like the one on the book?s cover.

Mayor Ingraham is aghast, and agrees to involve Grey in the case. An occult killer loose in Portland is not a vote winner, even though he has little sympathy for the deceased woman. Grey and Lean go about things in a manner reminiscent of Holmes and Watson, and are joined at times by single mother Helen Prescott. She?s the niece of the coroner Dr Steig, and both are drawn to the case. The whiskered doctor is interested not only in pathology but also psychiatry, having treated many Civil War veterans. Prescott, meanwhile, works at the Portland Public Library, which hosts the Maine Historical Society, and they?ve been commemorating the bicentenary of the Salem Witch Trials.

There seems to be a connection between the case and New England?s witchcraft heritage, but Grey, Lean and Prescott have a hard time discerning what the link is. Members of the local Temperance Union convolute matters by trying to silence a witness who?s seen the prostitute with her John, meanwhile the leader of a local occult group is extremely unhelpful. Perhaps these people have something to hide?

Further gruesome murders are discovered but it seems Grey and Lean are the only ones who can see how the cases are connected. Gradually the mayor loses interest in solving the girl?s murder, and he loses his patience with Grey and Lean too. However the pair carry on to the bitter end and the story involves visits to an opium den, a witch?s hilltop hovel, the Portland Observatory, a cathedral and several down and dirty taverns. There?s a bit of grave robbing too, for good measure.

The Salem Witch Society is more than a book, it presents a whole world fascinatingly crafted by KN Shields. He is an expert on Victorian Maine and describes the city in vivid detail. Similarly, his research into what happened in Salem, Massachusetts back in 1692, gives pattern to the storyline. The killer has taken inspiration from these events and truly believes in The Black Man. At times, however, the extensive detail dulls the sharpness of the story. Just as you?re hooked by the intrigue of the plot, a new wave of exposition washes away some of the intensity. For me, it wanted a touch more pace.

The characters are wonderfully drawn. Perceval Grey, for instance, turns out to be half-Native American. Raised by an upper-class, white grandfather, he had the finest of educations, and takes a superior bearing with him wherever he goes. Yet he knows the language of the local Indian tribe, and is at times treated as they are, like an unwanted gypsy. And, of course, native people were thought to be in league with the Devil by the Puritans in Salem, which adds another twist to Grey?s involvement. Lean, meanwhile, brings some heart to sit beside Grey?s intellect. He?ll act on instinct and emotion. He?s married, leaving Grey to the potential love interest with Helen Prescott.

Cleverly written, complex and lengthy, this is one for lovers of historical crime fiction. If you?re craving a New World take on Sherlock Holmes which is more Conan Doyle than Downey Jr, with a sprinkling of Gothic horror, you will also enjoy this book. There?s a rich world to discover in its pages, and the characters Shields has conjured up leave plenty of scope for further Perceval Grey mysteries. It?s released 3 January.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: IT?S NOT JUST LEGAL EDUCATION. Job Meltdown and Debt Crisis Among Veterinary School Graduates. ?From my position in the industry, in the economy in which we all work, the demand for veterinary services appears smaller than the supply of veterinarians. I routinely look at the financial statements of over 50 veterinary practices; equine, mixed and companion animal. Those financial statements demonstrate that practices do not generate enough profit to pay Veterinarians sufficiently to repay student loans under the repayment terms commonly available.?

Meanwhile, some data on how legal education is doing.

Thanks for the post. Many of us have been trying to point out basic facts to our colleagues, but most ears are deaf. Sadly, our professional organization, the AVMA is politically correct and useless.

They accredit new schools, and fund new ?diversity? chairs. Meanwhile, last week 17,000 veterinarians (about 1/4 of total!) were informed last week that AVMA?s health insurance program (through NY Life) will be dropping ALL of us at the end of 2013. Including dependents, about 36,000 people are losing their coverage. We will be forced onto the OCare exchanges. And the loss of our coverage is certainly not deemed newsworthy.

Senator Landrieu?s health care rep, Peter said we were losing our choice since others did not have the same choice. I guess it wasn?t ?fair? that we have all worked hard to have this choice. And AVMA has done diddley to prevent this.

Satellite Wars: China unveils 'cheaper' answer to GPS ? RT

Another BeiDou satellite goes up (Photo from facebook.com user Beidou Navigation System)

China?s rapidly-expanding rival to GPS, called BeiDou, has become available to customers across Asia-Pacific for the first time. It aims to claim a fifth of the satellite services market in the region in just three years.

Previously, the satellite constellation was only used by the country's military and government services. Now, it is being commercialized.

?The services now available include positioning, navigation, timing and short messages for China and surrounding areas. We hope BeiDou conquers 15 to 20 percent of the satellite services market in the Asia Pacific by 2015,? BeiDou spokesman Ran Chengqi announced at a press conference in Beijing, reported by Xinhua news agency.

China says that as it expands worldwide, the state-funded navigation system will bring in revenues of more than $60 billion a year.

At the moment, a user receiving BeiDou?s signal can determine their position to within ten meters. Most civilian GPS users are given positional data that is out by no more than 2 meters, but BeiDou?s makers say their services will be much cheaper than those of the US-government owned GPS.

BeiDou, which is the Chinese term for the Big Dipper star, is also expanding at an impressive rate, meaning it will soon be able to bridge the performance gap.

While GPS has been active since the 1970s, and has satellites in orbit that have been operating for two decades, BeiDou launched the first of its current generation satellites only five years ago.

GPS comprises 30 satellites, while BeiDou already has over fifteen, and is going to have another forty in orbit by the time the network is complete in 2020, at the cost of another $6 billion, according to Ran. The greater the number of satellites, the easier it is for the system to calculate location, time and velocity of moving objects.

But even if it matches the performance of the more established rival, BeiDou faces a long road to dislodging it from its dominance. As of now, 95 percent of equipment in China that uses a positioning system ? and that includes mobile phones, navigators, watches and ATMs ? relies on GPS services. The Chinese satellite data market is estimated to be worth almost $20 billion.

While BeiDou cannot be expected to supplant its successful predecessor instantaneously, many devices may be manufactured to receive signals from both of the systems, particularly with the government encouraging local producers to support the system. BeiDou receiver chips are currently more expensive than those for GPS, but prices should come down as they become more common.

Even if BeiDou does not hit its financial targets, it is still likely to be supported by Beijing at the behest of its armed forces, who are reluctant to rely on a foreign signal in all of its key military operations and equipment.? BeiDou?s first incarnation ? which was launched in 2000 and consists of 4 satellites ? was a largely military program.

The global satellite navigation segment has become a crowded marketplace over the past decade, and looks to become even more so. Russia recently completed its constellation of Glonass satellites (though it has since lost one). Europe is unrolling its Galileo system, while other countries such as India and Japan plan to develop at least regional navigation networks.

Whether these systems can truly compete with already accepted and functionally efficient GPS, or whether? they will remain vanity projects for emerging and powerful states, will be the big question over the next decade.

Home Based Business Tried And Tested Tips! - Empower Network

There are many appealing aspects of home businesses, but there are also intimidating aspects. It can be hard to decide exactly where it is you need to start. What makes a online business successful? It can be challenging because of the many questions involved. Fortunately, with the following article at your disposal, some direction is at your fingertips.

Knowing how to market online is the key to good profits. By blogging, using email newsletters, and publishing articles online, you can boost your business?s visibility and build your customer base, which will lead to higher profits.

When starting out in a home business, you need a website to start selling your services or products. This is a key opportunity for you to expand your target audience and maximize sales. If you need to get your website set up quick, you can hire a professional.

When you are ?knee-deep? in work, inform your friends and loved ones so that you are not bothered at that time. When somebody begins to interrupt you, try to nicely explain to them that you are doing work. If they arrive during your work hours, ask them to go somewhere else in the house and read a magazine or watch television until it?s your break time.

Don?t forget to add a link where someone can sign up for your email list. Furthermore, provide them with an array of chances to become a member of the mailing list by placing it on multiple pages throughout your site.

If you?re the only owner of your business on paper, don?t let anyone else make executive financial decisions for the company. Giving your spouse your business credit card may not seem like a bad idea, but if they go to buy business supplies and end up buying other items as well, you may lose the right to write off that purchase.

You must have the trust and support of your loved ones and family before you consider starting a home-based business. Running a online business is very time consuming, and can be both difficult and stressful. Your home business is less likely to succeed if your family will not help you.

Make sure any contracts related to your online business are in one spot, so you will have no problem locating them if you need them. You should also keep your own contracts, such as with your phone company or Internet provider, in the same place in case YOU have to battle with THEM over service!

If you do not know what you want to sell or market, consider making it something you use or could use. To choose the best product to represent, you must first identify a need. The higher the chance that you could use an item or service, the higher the chance others could use that item or service too.

Designate an area in your home that is devoted to work and nothing else. Make sure you have the space in your house to keep all things organized. This helps keep your business better organized so that you can be successful.

If you are setting up a work from home business, you must pay close attention to financial business planning. Write down your projected income for your new business. Inside of the statement you would guess the growth of your business and it?s needs along the way. You need to know how to estimate what you think your sales, expenses, and profits would be. These estimates will provide you with an idea of future income to plan your business finances.

Don?t just do the bare minimum to keep customers happy. Think about adding a little extra to their order, or slip a thank you note into the package. When you show someone that you are grateful for their business, they will come back for more. Two things that customers like are appreciation and free things. Find ways to show your customers that you appreciate them.

Make your own website banner page. Such a page will give you the opportunity to swap banner links and similar advertisements with affiliated websites. Utilizing a banner page will increase your search engine rankings and help your audience find your site and products easily.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home based business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your online business.

P.S.-If you love to have an office home business and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging about it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass business for home in the industry?s history!

Were there signs Ben Sebena was in need of help? | FOX6Now.com ...

Posted on: 5:28 pm, December 28, 2012, by Ben Handelman, updated on: 05:55pm, December 28, 2012

WAUWATOSA ? One expert tells FOX6 News there may have been signs that accused killer Ben Sebena was in need of help. Sebena is charged with killing his wife Jennifer outside of a fire station in Wauwatosa on Christmas Eve.

Sebena, a Marine and recipient of the Purple Heart, was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a 2010 YouTube video made by his church, Sebena told of his struggles.

Sebena opened up in the video about how he was nearly killed by a mortar attack in Iraq. He talked about his issued with PTSD ? and more importantly what he said had helped him overcome those issues.

?The moment I got there, there was so much love, and so?much joy in the room that all my fear left me,? said Ben Sebena in the video.

Sebena was on the road to recovery not only through his congregation at Elmbrook Church, but with the help of the local Veterans Administration. Sebena was taking yoga at the hospital for therapy. He was quoted in a 2010 magazine article about the program saying, ?It?s very relaxing? My wife has supported me and this is my gift?back to her. She doesn?t want me to repress feelings. I owe her.?

But Dr. Ashok Bedi, an expert on PTSD, says there were signs that Sebena was struggling. Elmbrook Church indicated Sebena had not been an active member in recent time. Dr. Bedi says nothing is more healing than structure.

?If you drop out it is always a very dangerous sign. It?is important to continue that thread, that continuity, of that support,? said Dr. Bedi.

Dr. Bedi says those suffering from PTSD who are not getting support are quickly agitated and lose a sense of reality.

?Someone who has PTSD is likely to perceive a sense of?betrayal by others. They easily feel betrayed, they feel overwhelmed,? said Dr. Bedi.

Dr. Bedi says PTSD is a growing problem in our society, but one that can be managed with help.

Frivolous Photo Friday -

I?m out of town right now with stunningly crappy internet, but will try to redeem myself a bit with some scheduled posts. Mostly pictures (uploaded before crappy internet). We?ll have plenty of time to do some hardcore SCIENCE in the new year! =)

For this Friday, let?s do mushrooms. I?ve collected a few photos of these things while going out hiking, and spend way too much time staring at the ground and rotten tree trunks for my own good. Despite having a slight extracurricular obsession with mushrooms, I?m not very good at identifying them ? can do genus if I?m lucky (ie, it?s obvious). But they?re alien and pretty to look at nevertheless, so I hope you enjoy! Remember, just as in the previous Frivolous Photo Friday where we witnessed a killing machine devouring a roach, these guys are not any more docile. Beneath the passive-looking fruiting bodies, the mycelium is busy exuding digestive substances into its surroundings, and soaking in the tasty remnants. Basically, the stomach of a fungus is its outside ? and we?re all part of it, sooner or later?

First, some Jack-o-Lanterns. Apparently, they bioluminesce, but I haven?t yet seen that.

?

?

?

?

?

?

A couple thinly stalked Mycena sp.. This is a particularly understudied genus of tiny, yet elegant, finely-stalked mushrooms ? some quite colourful, but most fairly pale. They still look cute close up though.

And here is something yellow with a seriously slimy cap. This is a young specimen, as the veil is still intact and hiding the gills. If this veil is finely net-like, these might be a Cortinarius sp., but I think the veil might be too densely fibrillar for that. Not that I really know what I?m talking about or anything, especially without half-functional internet.

If you have some ID or general cool mushroom stories to tell ? comment away!

DiCaprio gave away Winslet at secret wedding?

Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll in Hong Kong earlier in December.

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Kate Winslet's heart did go on.?The 37-year-old Oscar winner tied the knot with boyfriend Ned Rocknroll, 34, earlier this month in what apparently was a very hush-hush ceremony in New York, her rep confirmed Wednesday to E! News.?

The private nuptials were "attended by her two children and a very few friends and family," the rep said, adding that the couple got engaged over the summer.?

More fun facts about Ned Rocknroll

According to Britain's Sun, Leonardo DiCaprio gave the bride away in lieu of her father, the wedding being that much of a secret.

Rocknroll, a nephew of billionaire Richard Branson, and Winslet dated for about a year and a half before taking the plunge. The relationship with her fellow Brit developed after both were houseguests of Branson's on exclusive Necker Island in the Caribbean in August 2011 when a fire broke out, forcing the villa's occupants to evacuate. Rocknroll was the one who accompanied her and her kids back home, though she had been vacationing with model Louis Dowler.?

This is Winslet's third trip down the aisle, though it's the first time we really would advise her to not take her husband's name. (Or, then again...)

Before she got her MRS, Winslet got a CBE from the Queen!

She has a 12-year-old daughter, Mia, with first husband Jim Threapleton, and a 9-year-old son, Joe, with director Sam Mendes.

She and Mendes announced they were divorcing in 2010, a year after she won a Best Actress Oscar for "The Reader" and a Golden Globe for the Mendes-directed "Revolutionary Road."

More secret celebrity weddings

Rocknroll (born Abel Smith) was married once before, to socialite Eliza Cowdray.?

Storm blows through East, 200,000 in the dark

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? A muted version of a winter storm that has killed more than a dozen people across the eastern half of the country plodded across the Northeast on Thursday, trapping airliners in snow or mud and frustrating travelers still trying to return home after Christmas.

The storm, which was blamed for at least 16 deaths farther south and west, brought plenty of wind, rain and snow to the Northeast when it blew in Wednesday night. Lights generally remained on and cars mostly stayed on the road, unlike many harder-hit places including Arkansas, where 200,000 homes and businesses lost power.

By afternoon, the precipitation had stopped in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, though snow continued to fall in upstate New York and northern New England. Parts of snow-savvy New Hampshire expected as much as 18 inches.

Dale Lamprey, who was clearing off the sidewalk outside the legislative office building in Concord, already had several hours of shoveling under his belt by 8:30 a.m. Thursday and didn't expect it to get much better.

"I'm going to be shoveling all day, just trying to keep up with the snow," he said. "Which is impossible."

The Northeast's heaviest snowfall was expected to be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm heads into Canada on Friday, National Weather Service spokesman David Roth said.

While the East Coast's largest cities ? New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? saw mostly high winds and cold rain, other areas experienced a messy mix of rain and snow that slowed commuters and those still heading home from holiday trips. Some inbound flights were delayed in Philadelphia and New York's LaGuardia, but the weather wasn't leading to delays at other major East Coast airports.

On New York's Long Island, a Southwest Airlines jet bound for Tampa, Fla., veered off a taxiway and got stuck in mud Thursday morning. Officials said there were no injuries to the 129 passengers and five crew members. Though the area received heavy rain overnight, Southwest spokesman Paul Flanigan said it wasn't clear whether that played a role.

In Pittsburgh, a flight that landed safely during the storm Wednesday night got stuck in several inches of snow on the tarmac about two hours. The American Airlines flight arrived between 8 and 9 p.m., but then ran over a snow patch and got stuck.

Earlier, the storm system spawned tornadoes on Christmas along the Gulf Coast, startling people like Bob and Sherry Sims of Mobile, Ala., who had just finished dinner.

"We heard that very distinct sound, like a freight train," said Bob Sims, who lost electricity but was grateful that he fared better than neighbors whose roofs were peeled away and porches smashed by falling trees. In Georgiana, Ala., an 81-year-old man died Wednesday, a day after a tree fell on his home, emergency officials said.

Deaths from wind-toppled trees also were reported in Texas and Louisiana, but car crashes caused most of the fatalities. Two people were killed in Kentucky crashes, a New York man was killed after his pickup truck skidded on an icy road in northwest Pennsylvania, and an Ohio teenager died after losing control of her car and smashing into an oncoming snowplow.

In Arkansas, where two people died in a head-on collision, some of those who lost electricity could be without it for as long as a week because of snapped poles and wires after ice and 10 inches of snow coated power lines, said the state's largest utility, Entergy Arkansas.

Farther east, the storm knocked out power to more than 7,000 homes and businesses in Maryland, and utilities were preparing for more outages as the wind picked up. In New Jersey, gusts of more than 70 mph were recorded along the coast, and the weather service issued a flood warning for some coastal areas. There were about 800 power outages in Vermont, but only a handful in neighboring New Hampshire.

Schools on break and workers taking holiday vacations meant that many people could avoid messy commutes, but those who had to travel were urged to avoid it.

Few truckers were stopping into a TravelCenters of America truck stop in Willington, Conn., near the Massachusetts border early Thursday. Usually 20 to 30 an hour stop in overnight, but high winds and slushy roads had cut that to two to three people an hour.

"A lot of people are staying off the road," said Louis Zalewa, 31, who works there selling gasoline and staffing the store. "I think people are being smart."
