Planet of the mechanical apes: Scientists give us new ape-like robot

The iStruct Demonstrator makes several advances in robotics, including its high-tech feet.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / June 26, 2013

The video shows the walking pattern of the developed ape-like robotic system. Besides different walking directions (forward, backward, sideways, and diagonally) a smooth transition between the respective directions is realized.

Roboticists at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have built a robot called the iStruct Demonstrator that walks on its knuckles like an ape?s robot twin.?

The new robot, a 40 pound hulk of somewhat frightening-looking metal, makes several steps forward in robotics, with advanced features that distinguish it from most of its robot contemporaries.

While most robots have flat feet and must shuffle-walk, the iStruct Demonstrator has a heel-toe step. The complex feet work through a combination of 43 pressure sensors, six sensors used for collision detection, a 6-axis force sensor, and a distance sensor in the heel that can anticipate the heel strike. The walking system also includes a digital 3-axis accelerometer that understands the orientation of the foot structure and digital magnetic angular encoders that can monitor the movement of the foot and ankle structure.

High-tech feet: all the better to lumber after us with.

The iStruct Demonstrator?doesn't move particularly fast, but it can balance on its own and fluidly make transitions to travel in multiple directions.

The robot also has a spine that can bend, instead of the usual, unbendable back that prevents robots from stooping down and doing something unfriendly to us.

And while most robots must still be tethered to power supplies, the iStruct Demonstrator has a self-contained battery power source and can chase us down all on its own.?

DFKI has not specified what exactly the robot is designed to be used for, but the project is listed under the center?s Space Robotics department. That means it?s probably going quite far away from us on Earth ? good news.

This is not the first animal-like robot. The cat family has been a particular source of inspiration to scientists, though most of those cheetah-like creations cannot balance on their own and don?t have a self-contained power source. Earlier this month, though, scientists developed a feline robot that can toddle on its own four legs and that is expected to form the technological basis for advances in search-and-rescue robots.

Clipchat for iPhone review: A Snapchat alternative minus the terrible interface

Clipchat for iPhone review: A Snapchat alternative minus the terrible interface

Clipchat for iPhone does pretty much the same thing Snapchat does, self destructing photos and videos. If you've ever used Snapchat before, you're probably already aware that the interface is terrible and to be quite honest, pretty tacky. Clipchat's design is quite the opposite actually, and provides the same functionality and allows you to search for friends or invite them directly from Facebook, Twitter, or email.

When it comes to sending incriminating images (we're not here to judge), the two games in town are Snapchat and Facebook Poke. While Facebook Poke has a decent interface, it's obviously only limited to Facebook users. If you'd like cross-platform support that doesn't depend on Facebook, your option is typically Snapchat. Clipchat is currently available for both Android and iOS and provides most of the same options.

You can add users to Clipchat either by their Clipchat username or by searching for users on both Facebook and Twitter. From there, you can get to taking videos. Clipchat allows you to take up to five second videos in the same manner as Snapchat. For the person on the other end to view the video, they'll need to hold down on the screen. If they take a screenshot or attempt to, you'll also be notified, much like the other guys do. The screenshot will simply appear as a blank black screen in their camera roll, therefore not incriminating you for anything you may want to send.

The side menu of Clipchat is actually quite nice and gives you pretty decent details at a quick glance. When it comes to taking photos or videos, you can use either the front-facing or rear camera. Just toggle between photo and video along the top. Clipchat will also allow you to overlay text on the image after taking it. Snapchat does allow you to draw which is one feature that Clipchat does not currently offer.

The good

  • A much nicer interface than Snapchat
  • Snappy response times for sending and receiving both photos and videos
  • Searching for friends via email, username, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Inability to screenshot photos along with detection when people try to take screenshots

The bad

  • No drawing on images the way you can with Snapchat

The bottom line

If you have a need for a self destructing photo and video app, and hey, we aren't here to judge, Clipchat is a great option. Mainly because it's got an interface that isn't downright ugly. Facebook Poke will tie you into Facebook users only while Clipchat doesn't do that. If you're okay with not being able to draw directly on photos, Clipchat is definitely a better option than Snapchat.

Compulsory insurance products and you - Vanguard News

By ROSEMARY ONUOHA

The National Insurance Commission, NAICOM, in 2010 came up with the Market Development and Restructuring Initiative, MDRI, as part of efforts to boost insurance penetration in the country. Part of the objectives of the MDRI is to enforce the compulsory insurance under the Insurance Act of 2003. But so far, greater number of the general public is yet to buy into the initiative.

The reason is not farfetched.? The Nigerian public to a very large extent has a negative perception about insurance. Although the sector is changing for the better, it has not been easy to convince Nigerians.

Unfortunately though, this poor perception is negatively affecting the growth of the sector, it is high time Nigerians began to see insurance in a new light.

*Pensioners queuing for verification

*Pensioners queuing for verification

Oftentimes, Nigerians say that there is no value attached to insurance, but the truth is that insurance offers a lot of value.

Take for instance, people think that putting on the seat belt in a car is to prevent law enforcement agents from arresting them, whereas the purpose is to save lives.

There is no gainsaying the obvious that the loss of confidence from the general public in the insurance sector is as a result of indiscipline.

Insurance operators on their part, know that indiscipline and unprofessionalism have impacted negatively on their businesses over the years, as such, are employing all positive means to? win back the confidence of the general public.

An insurance practitioner once said ?We insurance practitioners are not disciplined professionals and as long as we remain indisciplined, some of those practices that we come out and criticise openly and go back to? privately will continue.?

The compulsory insurances
Compulsory insurances are those classes of insurance made compulsory by law, with the objective of providing protection to third parties and the general public.? The following types of insurance are compulsory in Nigeria:

. Builders Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003/under the Lagos State Building Control Law 2010
. Construction All Risks
. Occupiers Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003 and Lagos State Law
. Employers Liability ? (Group Life) ? under the Pension Reform Act 2004
. Healthcare Professional Indemnity ? under the NHIS Act 1999
. Motor Third Party Liability ? under the Insurance Act 2003

Builders Liability Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all owners or contractors of buildings under construction (more than 2 floors), must purchase to provide compensation in event of bodily injury, death and property damage to workers at construction sites and affected members of the public in the event of collapse of the building and other construction risks. The penalty for non-compliance is N250, 000 plus three years imprisonment. Record of conviction, sealing-off and demolition of the building are the penalties provided under the federal and Lagos State laws.

Occupiers Liability Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all owners or occupiers of public buildings, whether private or public, to provide under the National Insurance Act 2003 and the Lagos State Building Control Law 2010. A ?public building? is any building that is not 100 per cent used by the owner for residential purposes. Public buildings include tenement houses, hostels, residential buildings occupied by tenants, lodgers or licensees, and any other building to which members of the public enter and exit for the purpose of educational, recreational or medical services (e.g. schools, cinemas, hospitals, malls, petrol stations, etc).

Occupiers Liability Insurance provides compensation in events of bodily injury, death and property damage to the business users and members of the public in the event of building collapse, fire, earthquakes, storm or flood. The penalty for non-compliance is N100, 000 plus one year imprisonment, and sealing-off or demolition of the building under the federal and the Lagos State laws.

Employer?s Liability (Group Life) Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all employers of labour with more than four employees are required to have under the Pension Reform Act 2004. The law requires the employers have insurance that will provide for compensation in the event of death, disappearance, disability, or critical illness suffered by staff while in service and to subsidize pension provision in the event of mental or physical disability.

This law applies to both public and private sector employees. This means that employees (and their families) have the right to demand compensation and payment from their employers in the event of injury or death. The penalty for non-compliance with this law is N250,000, record of conviction, and in addition the place of business may be sealed up.

Healthcare Professional Indemnity Insurance
This type of insurance requires that all licensed health care providers and medical practitioners (such as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc) are required to have under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) 1999. The law? have insurance that will protect their patients in case of accidents or fatalities (death) resulting from professional negligence.

This type of insurance provides compensation to patients and their relatives in the event of involuntary murder, disability, shock and injury suffered by patients as a result of the negligence of Health Care Providers. The penalty for non-compliance with this law is a possible revocation of licence by the National Health Insurance Council, a record of conviction, and sealing-off of the premises.

Third Party Motor Liability Insurance
This is the minimum insurance that all owners and drivers of motor vehicles, motorcycles and special type vehicles plying the Nigerian roads are required to have under the National Insurance Act 2003. The third party motor liability insures the motor vehicle against liability as to death, bodily injury or damage to property of a third parties arising from the use of the vehicle. The penalty for non-compliance is a fine of up to N250,000 plus one year imprisonment.

Aerospace Merger Means Big Savings for U.S. Government, Company Says

PARIS ? Executives with Aerojet Rocketdyne, in its first week since forming from the merger of two rocket propulsion companies, said Tuesday (June 18) the new firm would save the U.S. government $1 billion over a decade and be responsive to the demands of customers, despite its dominance in the market for liquid-fueled rocket engines in the United States.

Warren Boley, president and CEO of Aerojet Rocketdyne, said here at the 2013 Paris Air Show that the combined company promised the U.S. government $100 million in acquisitions savings per year in order to help achieve the endorsement of the Pentagon as officials sought approval for the merger, which was finalized on June 14..

GenCorp Inc., the parent company of Aerojet, purchased Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne from United Technologies Corp. in a deal valued at $550 million. [The World's Tallest Rockets: How They Stack Up]

The savings are vital to the sustainment of U.S. military and NASA satellite programs, which have been hamstrung by rising launch costs over the last few years.

Boley said the company's commitment to $1 billion in cost savings over the next 10 years is being reviewed by two Defense Department contracting agencies.

"We're willing to stand up and be counted on that [promise]," Boley said.

Aerojet Rocketdyne officials also promised innovation and responsiveness to customer needs, despite concerns that competition would suffer with the merger of the two primary liquid-fueled rocket engine manufacturers in the United States.

"Going forward, I want to have the ability to have a complete technology suite that satisfies all customers affordably," Boley said. "There are immediate affordability opportunites in our launch business in future technology. That's what is very exciting when you look at the launch portion of the Aerojet Rocketdyne business."

Products competing with each other

One immediate test of Aerojet Rocketdyne's promise involves a dispute over the engines used on the first stage of the Orbital Sciences Corp. Antares rocket, which successfully launched for the first time in April.

Once RD AMROSS ? a joint venture of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and engine-builder NPO Energomash of Russia ? is incorporated into Aerojet Rocketdyne, the propulsion firm will find its products in competition with each other in many markets, including for the first stage of Antares and advanced boosters for NASA's Space Launch System. [NASA's SLS Rocket for Deep-Space Flights (Images)]

Antares is under contract to NASA for eight commercial cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station, plus an additional test flight later this year. Orbital hopes to win additional Antares launch orders from NASA, military and commercial customers.

The Antares first stage is powered by two kerosene-fueled AJ26 engines supplied by Aerojet, which acquired the engines from Russia in the 1990s. The engines ? known as NK-33s in Russia ? were built in the 1960s and 1970s for the Soviet Union's N1 moon rocket.

Aerojet imported the engines to support the company's U.S. propulsion business and modified each unit to gimbal, allowing the engines to steer rockets ascending from the launch pad into orbit. The upgraded engines under Aerojet's control are renamed the AJ26.

But the NK-33 engine is not in production in Russia anymore. Aerojet Rocketdyne has an inventory of 43 AJ26 engines available for Orbital's Antares rocket ? enough for 21 flights. Between 12 and 18 more NK-33 engines are stockpiled in Russia.

"Orbital is currently pursuing a long-term first stage propulsion system for its new medium-class Antares launch vehicle," Orbital spokesman Barry Beneski said in a statement. "Orbital currently uses the Aerojet AJ26, which is derived from the Russian NK-33, and has a sufficient supply of AJ26 engines available to meet commitments to NASA for commercial cargo supply to the International Space Station."

Finite engine supply

Aware of the finite supply of AJ26 engines, Orbital Sciences began inquiring about the purchase of RD-180 engines ? then controlled by Aerojet rival Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne ? to support the company's long-term strategy of expanding the Antares market into medium-lift satellite launches and further cargo missions to the space station.

RD AMROSS is responsible for U.S. sales of the RD-180 engine for United Launch Alliance's Atlas 5 rocket.

Lockheed Martin Corp., a ULA stakeholder along with Boeing Co., invested in the development of the RD-180 engine for the Atlas 5 rocket in the 1990s. ULA still maintains intellectual property rights to the engine, giving the Atlas 5 rocket exclusive access to RD-180 engines in the U.S. market.

The Federal Trade Commission launched an investigation into the matter after complaints of "anti-competitive" practices made by Orbital against ULA and RD AMROSS.

"Today, the only engine in active production that is technically suitable for the Antares and available for use in the U.S. is the RD-180 engine from Russia," Beneski said. "Orbital continues to investigate all potentially available engine options, one of which is the continued use of AJ26 engines, based on new production NK-33 engines."

Aerojet Rocketdyne plans to close the acquisition of Pratt & Whitney subsidiary RD AMROSS later this year, after securing approvals from the Russian government.

Boley said Tuesday that Aerojet Rocketdyne has a written agreement with the NK-33 engine's manufacturer, the Kuznetsov Design Bureau in Russia, to start production of the engine. If Orbital places places an order for more AJ26 engines by the end of 2013, Boley said new NK-33s could arrive in the United States for Aerojet upgrades by late 2016.

Egypt's army says it's ready to save nation

CAIRO (AP) ? Wading into an increasingly volatile fray, Egypt's military on Sunday gave the nation's Islamist rulers and their opponents a week to reach an understanding before planned June 30 opposition protests aimed at forcing out the president, in a toughly worded warning that it will intervene to stop the nation from entering a "dark tunnel."

The powerful military also gave a thinly veiled warning to President Mohammed Morsi's hard-line backers that it will step in if the mostly secular and liberal protesters, who have vowed to be peaceful, are attacked during the planned demonstrations.

In a bid to project a business-as-usual image, Morsi's office said in a statement late Sunday that the president met with the army's chief, Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, to discuss the "domestic scene and the government's efforts to maintain the security of the nation and the safety of its citizens." There was no mention of el-Sissi's warning.

Seeking to assert Morsi's seniority over el-Sissi ? the president is the supreme commander of the armed forces ? the brief statement, alluding to June 30, said he ordered the quick completion of plans to protect the state's strategic and vital installations.

The opposition argues that Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood, despite having won a series of elections since the 2011 revolution that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak, have squandered their legitimacy with heavy handed misrule. It contends that the Islamists have encroached on the independence of the judiciary, sought to monopolize power, and pushed through an Islamist-backed constitution, breaking promises to seek consensus.

Morsi's supporters say the opposition has shunned his offers of dialogue and now are turning to force to remove him because they have been unable to compete at the ballot box.

On Sunday, a court compounded Morsi's troubles by saying members of his Muslim Brotherhood conspired with Hamas, Hezbollah and local militants to storm a prison in 2011 and free 34 Brotherhood leaders, including Morsi. Also, the most iconic youth figure of the 2011 revolution, Wael Ghonim, called on Morsi to step down before June 30 to prevent bloodshed.

Both sides say they intend to be peaceful on June 30, but many fear the day could descend into violence. There are worries young protesters could attack offices of the Brotherhood and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice party. Some of Morsi's hard-line supporters have vowed to "smash" the protests or have declared protesters infidels who deserve to be killed.

"Those who will spray Morsi with water will be sprayed with blood," warned one cleric.

El-Sissi, weighed in with his first public comments on the planned protests while addressing officers at a seminar Sunday.

It was his most direct warning yet that the military ? which ruled Egypt directly after Mubarak's fall until Morsi's June 30, 2012 inauguration ? could step in.

He said the country's divisions had reached a point that they were a danger to the state itself.

"Those who think that we (the military) are oblivious to the dangers that threaten the Egyptian state are mistaken. We will not remain silent while the country slips into a conflict that will be hard to control," he said in his comments, made public on the military's Facebook page.

Ostensibly, el-Sissi addressed both sides. But his demand for "genuine reconciliation" seemed to be a nod toward the opposition's stance that Morsi's past gestures of "dialogue" have been empty and a signal to him that he must make compromises.

"It is the most powerful public and direct message from the military to the president," said analyst Abdullah el-Sinnawi, thought to be close to the military. "I see this as a warning of a coup if Morsi does not find a solution."

Another analyst, Gamal Abdel-Gawad of the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic studies, said the comments signaled a change in the military's position.

"We are in a different phase now. He (el-Sissi) is giving a deadline for a solution to the president to do what he can do or else they will be forced to intervene," he said.

El-Sissi appeared to lower the threshold for what warrants intervention by the military. In earlier pronouncements, he cited the collapse or near collapse of the state.

On Sunday, however, he said the military has a "patriotic and moral responsibility" to stop Egypt from "slipping into a dark tunnel of conflict or internal fighting." He said sectarian violence and the collapse of state institutions would also justify intervention.

He urged all parties to reach a "genuine reconciliation" to defuse the crisis before June 30.

"We have a week during which a great deal can be achieved. This is a call that is only motivated by love of the nation, its presence and future," he said.

In a thinly veiled warning to Morsi's hard-line backers, el-Sissi said: "It is not honorable that we remain silent in the face of the terrorizing and scaring of our Egyptian compatriots. There is more honor in death than watching a single Egyptian harmed while the army is still around."

El-Sissi also warned that the military will no longer tolerate any "insults" to the armed forces and its leaders, apparently a reference to a series of comments by figures from the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, that were perceived by the military as derogatory.

After its post-Mubarak period of direct rule, the powerful military has largely stayed out of the political fray. Soon after his inauguration, Morsi pushed the military's top two generals into retirement, ending the de facto military rule of Egypt that dates back to a 1952 coup that toppled the monarchy.

Morsi appointed el-Sissi as military chief and defense minister, leading many to believe the general would be beholden to the president. But el-Sissi, through a series of subtle but telling hints, has shown a significant level of independence as well as displeasure over the policies of the Morsi administration.

Morsi's comrades in the Brotherhood have made it clear that they want the military to focus entirely on protecting the nation against outside threats, but el-Sissi has countered by making clear that maintaining the security and stability of the nation was part of the military's mandate.

Protest organizers say they will bring out crowds across the country, building on public anger over a host of problems in the country, from surging crime and rising prices to fuel shortages, power cuts and unemployment. The protests call for Morsi to step down and early elections to be held at the end of a short transitional period.

Sunday, another prominent figure from the anti-Mubarak uprising, Ghoneim, weighed in with a video posted on his Twitter account saying it was time for Morsi to go.

"I was hoping that I would thank (Morsi) for what he has done for Egypt a year after he took office. But regrettably, the conditions in Egypt now are very grave," Ghoneim said. "Please stop the strife we are approaching, for the sake of God and country, and resign before June 30."

The report issued by a court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia added to Morsi troubles. The court statement read by judge Khaled Mahgoub named two members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood as among the conspirators along with Hamas and Hezbollah members in an attack on Wadi el-Natroun prison on Jan. 29, 2011.

The judge said his court would refer the evidence and testimonies it gathered to prosecutors so they can start their own investigation.

Morsi and the 33 Brotherhood leaders who were in jail in 2011 have maintained that they were freed by local residents. Hamas, the Palestinian chapter of the Brotherhood, has denied involvement in the attacks on prisons.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party said Sunday's court statement on the Wadi el-Natroun prison break was "void and illegal." It posted on its Twitter account that Mahgoub "will end like any other judge who did not respect the law or the constitution."

The prison breaks took place during the 18-day popular uprising that toppled Mubarak's regime. The breaks involved about 11 of Egypt's 41 prisons and led to a flood of some 23,000 criminals onto the streets, fueling a crime wave that continues to this day.
