HERMON, Maine (AP) -- A dozen protesters in Hermon are calling for stepped-up inspections of Maine's railways following a runaway train derailment north of the border that killed at least five people and left about 40 people missing.
Gathering Monday outside the entrance to Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway, the demonstrators also called for a reduction in the number of oil tankers traveling across Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick.
The Federal Railway Administration, which regulates rail traffic and conducts rail inspections, had no immediate comment.
Maine environmental officials are monitoring the derailment in Quebec but do not expect the oil spill and fires to affect the state's air or water.
On Monday, state officials reported that all Maine firefighters had returned, and that Canadian officials needed no additional help.
