A recent survey by the social media network Pixwoo (yup, me neither) claims to have defined the ?average? UK gamer. The took a sample of 2000 people who called themselves ?gamers.? They found that the stereotypical perception of a teenage kid, fixed to the TV and playing for hours whilst remarking on his online opponents mother?s sexual availability, didn?t quite reflect the reality.
For starters women are just as likely to indulge in the pastime as men, and both groups are on average 35 years old. This means that the kids that grew up on the original consoles like the NES through to the Megadrive and even the Amiga and similar home computers, are still the core audience for games. This makes sense when you consider that you?ll need some disposable income to really dedicate yourself to gaming, and with annual income of ?23,000, the average gamer is in the perfect position to keep up to date.
A spokesperson for Pixwoo.com said: ?This snapshot into the lives of ordinary gamers disputes many myths about the pastime, showing how integrated gaming is into our daily routine.?
The survey appears to be a bit skewed to a more casual audience however, which might account for some of their findings. Not only does their population sample have to be the kind of person who actually fills in surveys, but also goes on social networking sites, something that ?hardcore? shut gamers wouldn?t do. The Wii was classed as the current gen console of choice, followed by the PS3 then the 360.
Here?s the full rundown of what makes an average gamer. It also quite accurately describes myself. I?m so average.
The average gamer will:
*Play computer games five days a week, for 2 hours and 32 minutes each day.
*Will stay up until 10.58pm playing games
*Has stayed up until 1.12am on occasion
*Owns two different consoles
*Owns 18 games
*Can complete a game in four-and-a-half weeks
*Will go to a midnight opening for a new game once a year, spending four hours queuing each time
*Has two rows a week with their partner about gaming
*Has five online friends in the gaming community
*Is 35 years old
*Earns ?23,244 a year
*Is married or in a relationship
*Has one child
*Drives a Ford, Vauxhall or BMW
*Works almost 32 hours a week
This is all a part of their push for the upcoming Pixwoo App for iOS and Android.
