Sports: Judge rules IHSA can charge media for webcast access

SPRINGFIELD ? A judge has ruled that the Illinois High School Association hasn't violated the terms of a 2008 settlement over the right to sell photos taken at sports events by charging newspapers that want to provide webcasts.

A Sangamon County judge ruled Tuesday that the IHSA didn't violate the agreement with the Illinois Press Association over media access to high school sports by trying to charge The (Crystal Lake) Northwest Herald $75 to allow it show a video webcast of a football playoff game earlier this month.

IHSA Director Marty Hickman says the ruling reflects the association's longstanding policy of charging for broadcast rights.

But IPA attorney Don Craven says the settlement included access for web-based newspaper products. Craven says the organization may appeal.
