Today its probably the best preserved Kasbah in the Sahara region, and certainly the most exotic. The fort now has UNESCO protection, but for years revenue for films have kept it maintained. Hollywood blockbusters like Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator have used the fort for filming, and so have pumped money into the area for its maintenance.
