Exploring The Nooks And Crannies Of Devon

When planning a break in Devon, holiday cottages available to rent will give you the opportunity to explore one of Englands most attractive counties.

Sea and land

One of the many reasons for the popularity of Devon, holiday cottages in the enviable geographical position on the western peninsula of England will be blessed with a landscape of both beautiful coastline and incredible inland scenery. In fact, it is lucky to have two entirely different coastlines: the northern being based on the Atlantic and Bristol Channel, whilst the southern looks out over the English Channel towards north-western France.

For centuries it has been famed for its seafaring traditions, and coastal towns such as Exmouth and Plymouth have incredibly interesting histories that are well worth exploring.
Over more recent times, the county has also become famous for its fantastic beaches and bathing opportunities; well-known resorts such as Ilfracombe, Clovelly, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham offer the chance to discover some amazing beaches and coves in Devon. Holiday cottages can be located amidst a wild and dramatic ocean backdrop.
Of course, the beach isnt everybodys scene and if you prefer a different sort of natural grandeur, inland you wont be disappointed. For example, Dartmoor offers the chance to see one of the last great wildernesses to be found in Southern England and is a haven for flora and fauna.

Towns and history

Some of the countys towns are historical and architectural gems. Exeter is a lovely town with a particularly magnificent cathedral, and the much smaller Totnes is very pretty and has a slightly alternative lifestyle feel to it that many people find very attractive.

If you like castles and stately homes, youll find plenty within easy reach of just about anywhere in Devon, holiday cottages will place you within easy access of many of these. Just to mention a few, you may wish to look at Mount Edgcumbe (a magnificent stately home), Castle Drogo or Compton Castle. There will be enough there to keep any history buff fully occupied.

Weather

Of course, virtually anybody deciding to take their holidays in the United Kingdom is likely to wonder about the prevailing weather. Although nowhere in Britain can ever claim to offer guaranteed weather, the West Country of England, typically defined as being Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset (and in some accounts Wiltshire), tends to get some of the best summer weather around - a stretch of the South Devon Coast is even known as the English Riviera. Late spring and summer temperatures can be comfortably warm, and although showers are not unknown, visitors might be able to hope for some decent weather during the peak holiday seasons. Average maximum daily temperatures during the summer months range between 19-21 C, and in the months of July and August the average number of sunshine hours per month should be somewhere in the region of 200.
