Did Caravaggio meet a grisly end - with the Vatican's complicity?

Citing documents from the Vatican Secret Archives, an Italian historian argues that 17th-century documents reveal Renaissance artist Caravaggio was assassinated by the Knights of Malta.

In one of his most graphic paintings, the rabble-rousing Renaissance artist Caravaggio?depicted his tortured face on the head of Goliath, slain and decapitated by the boy warrior David.

An Italian historian thinks that Caravaggio may have met just such a grisly end ? at the hands of the Knights of St. John of Malta, the chivalric order founded during the Crusades.

Vincenzo Pacelli, a Caravaggio expert from the University of Naples, has unearthed documents from the Vatican Secret Archives and state archives in Rome that suggest the Knights ordered the artist to be assassinated in revenge for him attacking and wounding on one of their members during a brawl.

They then dumped his body in the sea at Palo, north of Rome, which would explain why there are no documents recording his death.

Until now, conventional wisdom said Caravaggio died either from an illness or lead poisoning from the oil paints he used.

The murder was ?commissioned and organized? by the Knights of Malta and carried out with the complicity of the Vatican, Mr. Pacelli says in his forthcoming book, "Caravaggio ? Between Art and Science."

The historian found strange discrepancies in correspondence between Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a powerful Vatican secretary of state, and Deodato Gentile, a papal ambassador, in which the painter?s place of death was cited as the island of Procida near Naples, ?a place that Caravaggio had nothing to do with,? according to Pacelli.

A document written by Caravaggio?s doctor and first biographer claimed that the painter died at the age of 38 north of Rome, but the place name was later scrubbed out and replaced by the name of a town in Tuscany.?Pacelli also found an account written 20 years after Caravaggio?s death in which an Italian archivist wrote that the artist had been ?assassinated.?

He believes it all adds up to evidence of an assassination plot by the Knights of Malta which was then covered up.

Not all experts are convinced by the new theory.?John T. Spike, a Caravaggio expert at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., is skeptical of the idea that the painter was murdered on the Knights' orders.

?The problem with the theory is that the Knights had ample opportunities to kill him sooner ? either when he was living in Malta, or when he then went to Sicily, which is very close,? says Mr. Spike. ?Why did they wait so long??

The academic sparring will continue, but more than four centuries after his death in 1610, the true fate of Caravaggio remains an enigma.

Early 'Avengers' Reviews Point To Fan And Box-Office Gold

Talk Nerdy asks, 'Will the superhero all-star flick live up to the hype?' Fans who got an early peek seem to think so
By Eric Ditzian

"The Avengers," apparently, rules.

After a string of Los Angeles screenings, nerdy tastemakers have been squealing all over Twitter about what director Joss Whedon has delivered for this loooooong-in-development superhero all-star flick. "Like, double plus awesome," declared Seth Green. "Lost" guru Damon Lindelof came up with a Twitter hashtag that's a little too colorful to reprint here without a tweaking: .

To Lindelof, I say right back: F---yeah! Because, honestly, what a relief! For a while now on "Talk Nerdy," Brian Phares and I have been expressing worries like:

» There are too many heroes! With Iron Man fighting for screen time with Captain America, with Thor potentially chaffing against Loki as much in a brother-vs.-brother brouhaha as in matters of plot-point development, "Avengers" is simply going to be overstuffed. No character or storyline will be given room to breathe.

» Is the Hulk going to look hokey? Can the CGI beast hold his own next to his flesh-and-blood compatriots and not come off looking like a cartoon?

» Are 2011's good-but-not-great Marvel installments ("Captain America" and "Thor") a sign of good-but-not-great things to come?

And so on. Now, though, our cautious, please-Joss-don't-hurt-us approach to the film appears to be unfounded. "Avengers" hasn't yet screened in New York, so we can't throw our own nerdy support behind the film, but the future is looking superheroically bright.

Moviegoers are taking notice too. Early box-office tracking suggests the movie will open north of $125 million over the first weekend in May. That'd be double what both "Thor" and "Captain America" reeled in last year. The question is whether "Avengers" can top the $128 million opening weekend of "Iron Man 2" in 2010. If Tony Stark can collect all that cheddar on his own, one would expect a film assembling so many Marvel heroes and villains on one screen would eclipse that mark. Based on the early geek buzz, it does seem like "Avengers" can pull it off. And it's the buzz that Whedon is counting on.

"We really put the characters through it," he told MTV News recently, "and we want the audience to be with them every step of the way and come out of it going, 'That was an extraordinary experience, and now I want to pay to see it again.' "

Sudan mobilizes army as South claims key oil field

KHARTOUM/JUBA (Reuters) - Sudan said it would mobilize its army against South Sudan on Wednesday, and halted talks with Juba over oil payments and other disputed issues after the South occupied an oilfield vital to the North's economy.

With South Sudan in turn accusing Sudan of bombing a village on the southern side of their 1,800-km (1,200-mile) border, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the United States called for an end to clashes that threaten to spark a full-blown conflict.

South Sudan, which seceded in July, has been locked in an increasingly bitter dispute with the North over the fate of the formerly joint oil industry and other issues as fighting has escalated in the ill-defined border region.

South Sudan's army (SPLA) on Tuesday attacked Heglig, a disputed area containing an oilfield that accounts for about half of Sudan's 115,000 barrel-a-day output. The South's army claimed to be holding the oil wells.

"There is no doubt that Heglig area and the oil wells are under control of the SPLA," South Sudanese military spokesman Philip Aguer said, adding that the North's air force had bombed SPLA positions in Heglig and other areas.

A Sudanese official said he expected the fighting would hit oil output.

"I expect ... these oilfields will be affected, definitely, and at least there will not be production. If there is a conflict in the area, this is the least," said Rahamatalla Mohamed Osman, Sudan's undersecretary of foreign affairs.

Motorists worried about a possible disruption to fuel supplies formed lines at petrol stations to stock up as news of the Heglig attack spread through the capital, although the oil ministry issued a statement saying it had enough fuel.

The U.S. State Department condemned South Sudan's attack on Heglig, calling it "an act which goes beyond self-defense".

It also condemned Sudan's "continued aerial bombardment in South Sudan" and said the two sides needed to agree on an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Sudan's U.N. Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman said Sudan had exercised maximum self-restraint and if the U.N. Security Council did not condemn South Sudan's actions and demand it withdraw its troops, then Sudan would be forced to "retaliate severely deep inside South Sudan."

"We are ready for settling all the disputes with the south through peaceful negotiations, but with the recent developments they make it very difficult ... it would be extremely difficult to sit with somebody who has stabbed you in the back," he said.

UNRESOLVED TALKS

The South seceded from Khartoum's rule last year, but the two sides have not agreed on issues including division of national debt, the status of citizens in each another's territory and the exact position of the border.

Oil is among the most sensitive issues. Landlocked South Sudan shut down its roughly 350,000 barrel-per-day output in January in a dispute over how much it should pay to export crude using pipelines and other infrastructure in Sudan.

Sudan's remaining output only serves domestic consumption.

Each side accuses the other of backing rebels in their territory.

"I don't think there can be negotiations in this climate," Osman said. "What happened yesterday is a violation of international laws and an aggression on Sudan, and we have all the right to defend ourselves and regain the territories which were occupied by government of South Sudan."

South Sudan's forces pushed 70 km (40 miles) into Sudan's territory on Tuesday, Osman said. An information ministry statement accused South Sudan of "using mercenary forces and rebel groups" in the attack. Juba routinely denies such charges.

Following the incursion, parliament ordered a halt to negotiations with the South, Sudan's state media said.

State news agency SUNA said Sudan would order a general army mobilization but gave no further details. It quoted Defense Minister Abdel Raheem Muhammad Hussein as saying the army was capable of preserving stability and controlling the situation.

AU CALLS FOR WITHDRAWAL

SUNA said Sudan would halt all talks with Juba sponsored by the African Union and withdraw its negotiating team from Addis Ababa immediately.

The African Union called for the "immediate and unconditional withdrawal" of South Sudan's army from Heglig and urged restraint on both sides.

U.N. chief Ban contacted South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and Sudan's U.N. ambassador, urging both sides to exercise restraint and avoid further bloodshed, spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters in New York.

"The Secretary-General urged (Kiir) to consider holding a presidential summit immediately to build confidence and assure the peoples of South Sudan and Sudan that peace and dialogue is the only option for both sides," he said.

South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said the Sudanese air force had bombed the village of Abiemnom in South Sudan's Unity state on Wednesday, wounding four people including a child.

He said South Sudan had been acting in self defense after Sudan launched a ground attack from Heglig late on Monday. Sudanese officials also said they were only trying to defend their territory.

What?s Your Walk Score?

Ideally, Walk Score would track infrastructural and environmental issues: Does a street have good (or any) sidewalks? How long do you have to wait for the light? What?s the traffic volume? How many pedestrians have been struck in the crosswalk by turning cars? What?s the street level temperature? The company would also do well to recognize that proximity does not always equal walkability. Scott Bricker, the director of America Walks, says, ?If you do a Walk Score search on Beaverton Transit Center, in suburban Portland, it has a Walk Score of 96, off the charts,? he says. ?If you look at a Google Map, you see you can?t walk anywhere. It?s all strip mall stuff, five lane streets.? Indeed, Walk Score (guided by an advisory board) has been trying to refine its metric, and an ongoing beta service, called ?Street Smart Walk Score,? factors in actual walking routes, including an amoeba-like ?zone? of everything that can be walked to in 15 minutes. It also features variables like shorter block lengths and frequency of intersections?two factors urbanists associate with more walkable places. But here, too, data is lacking. ?There isn?t a good national dataset of crosswalks,? Hersh says.

Financial Counseling For Your Bills - Help Managing Money | Debt ...

There are several different courses of action a consumer can take when it comes to dealing with massive credit card debt bills. Debt relief organizations have many different programs that they offer to consumers that will help lower debt and get financial obligations under control. But a proactive financial expert knows that the solution to the problems does not end with lowering debt.

Each consumer has underlying reasons as to why they allowed themselves to get into debt. As you go through the process of handling your debt, you also need to address the core reasons for running up debt and develop good spending habits that will get those core problems under control. It is not an easy process, and that is why many consumers turn to financial counseling for help.

A financial counselor will help you identify your bad spending habits, understand how it affects your financial situation, and then give you help on preventing those habits in the future. If you have the desire to turn your bad financial situation around, then a financial counselor will help you understand how to do it.

- Getting the Facts About Your Financial Situation

A financial counselor will give you the facts about credit card debt and help you avoid the misinformation that can confuse people. For example, using credit cards is not an inherently bad thing. Credit cards, when used properly, can be great financial assets to you and your family. The key is to not maximize the balance on your credit cards, reduce the number of credit cards you have and pay your balances every month.

If you want to qualify for a mortgage or car loan later on, you will need to establish good credit. You do that by properly using a credit card. You also establish good credit by making sure you do not over-extend yourself with too many credit card bills and too much available credit. Your credit counselor can help you understand the facts about credit card use and show you the responsible way to use them.

- Managing Your Money

If you do not know how to manage your money, then you will not be able to develop good spending habits. A financial counselor will show you how to set up your own personal budget and use that budget to monitor your spending. You can also use a budget to plan your savings account contributions and pay off debt as well.

The personal budget is a very powerful tool that financial counselors use to help consumers understand how they spend money and then find ways to lower their expenses. The feeling of getting out from under credit card debt is a strong motivator for many consumers and that is one of the main things that makes a personal budget so effective.

- Debt Negotiation For Your Bills

If you wait until your debt is getting out of control before you contact a financial counselor, then you will be introduced to the process of debt negotiation. This a service offered by certain financial professionals that will help you reduce your debt and get your finances back under control.

The debt counselor will negotiate pay-off balances with your creditors and then consolidate your debt into one monthly payment. It is an option that you can use to help you get out from under your oppressive credit card bills. It gives you the room you need to utilize the good spending habits the counselor is teaching you by freeing up more money each month.

DebtConsolidation.com features full-service debt negotiation and financial counseling organizations. Titanic's sinking: Was it more than human folly

FILE - In this Aug. 17, 2005 file photo, a small boat makes its way through the icebergs in Disko Bay, Greenland. An entire century, two high-profile government investigations and countless books and movies have passed, yet we're still looking for and debating what really caused the Titanic to hit an iceberg and sink on that crystal-clear chilly night. Physicists Donald Olson and Russell Doescher at Texas State University said that a few months earlier, the moon, sun and Earth lined up in a way that adds extra pull on Earth's tides along with the Earth being its closest to the moon in 1,400 years. The unusual tides caused glaciers to calve icebergs off Greenland. Those southbound icebergs got stuck near Labrador and Newfoundland but then slowly moved south again, floating into the shipping currents just in time to greet the Titanic, the astronomers theorized. (AP) ? After an entire century that included two high-profile government investigations and countless books and movies, we're still debating what really caused the Titanic to hit an iceberg and sink on that crystal-clear chilly night.

Maybe there's more to blame than human folly and hubris. Maybe we can fault freak atmospheric conditions that caused a mirage or an even rarer astronomical event that sent icebergs into shipping lanes. Those are two of the newer theories being proposed by a Titanic author and a team of astronomers.

But the effort to find natural causes that could have contributed to the sinking may also be a quest for an excuse ? anything to avoid gazing critically into a mirror, say disaster experts and Titanic historians.

New theories and research are important "but at its most basic what happened is they failed to heed warnings and they hit the iceberg because they were going too fast," said James Delgado, director of maritime heritage at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

With this week's 100th anniversary of Titanic's sinking, the interest in all things Titanic is steaming faster than the doomed cruise ship on its maiden voyage.

One of the novel new theories says Titanic could have been the victim of a mirage that is similar to what people see in the desert. It's the brainchild of Tim Maltin, a historian who has written three books about Titanic. The latest, an e-book titled "A Very Deceiving Night" emphasizes how the atmosphere may have tricked the Titanic crew on a cloudless night.

"This was not avoidable human error," Maltin said in a telephone interview from London. "It's just about air density difference."

It was a beautiful clear night and for a couple of days, there had been something strange going on in the air over the North Atlantic, reported by all sorts of ships, including the crew on Titanic, Maltin said.

The unusually cold sea air caused light to bend abnormally downward, Maltin said. The Titanic's first officer, William McMaster Murdoch, saw what he described as a "haze on the horizon, and that iceberg came right out of the haze," Maltin said, quoting from the surviving second officer's testimony.

Other ships, including those rescuing survivors, reported similar strange visuals and had trouble navigating around the icebergs, he said.

British meteorologists later monitored the site for those freaky thermal inversions and said 60 percent of the time they checked, the inversions were present, Maltin said.

The same inversions could have made the Titanic's rescue rockets appear lower in the sky, giving a rescue ship the impression that the Titanic was smaller and farther away, Maltin said.

Physicists Donald Olson and Russell Doescher at Texas State University have another theory in Sky &Telescope magazine that fits nicely with Maltin's. Olson ? who often comes up with astronomical quirks linked to historical events ? said that a few months earlier, the moon, sun and Earth lined up in a way that added extra pull on Earth's tides. The Earth was closer to the moon than it had been in 1,400 years.

They based their work on historical and astronomical records and research in 1978 by a federal expert in tides.

The unusual tides caused glaciers to calve icebergs off Greenland. Those southbound icebergs got stuck near Labrador and Newfoundland but then slowly moved south again, floating into the shipping currents just in time to greet the Titanic, the astronomers theorized. Maltin said the icebergs also added a snaking river of super-cold water that magnified the mirage effect.

Tides and mirages may have happened, but blaming them for Titanic's sinking "misses the boat," said Lee Clarke, a Rutgers University disaster expert and author of the book "Worst Cases."

"The basic facts of Titanic are not in dispute: The boat was going too fast in dangerous waters," Clarke said. If Titanic had stopped for the night because of ice like the British steamship Californian did, "tides and mirages wouldn't have mattered."

On April 14, the day it hit the iceberg, the Titanic received seven heavy ice warnings, including one from the Californian less than an hour before the fateful collision. The message said: "We are stopped and surrounded by ice." Titanic sent back a message that said "Shut up. We are busy."

Clarke said people keep looking for additional causes "because if it's nature or God, then we're off the hook, morally and practically."

Yale disaster expert Charles Perrow said he found the mirage theory plausible, especially because cold air played visual tricks that were a factor in a 1979 airplane crash in Antarctica that was originally blamed on pilot error.

Steven Biel, who wrote "Down with the Old Canoe: A Cultural History of the Titanic Disaster," said he understands the search for other reasons.

"There's something appealing about retrospectively gaining control over an event that's centrally about uncertainty and contingency and lack of control," he said.

BBC Sport connected TV app launches on UK TiVos, brings BBC News along
As a part of the BBC's run up to this year's Olympics, it is bringing new approaches to broadcast technology in a number of ways including 3D, online streaming, multiple HD channels and now, connected TV apps. Today it's launching a BBC Sports app for connected TVs that bring in new interactive features via the BBC Red Button which will first appear on Virgin Media's TiVo platform, along with a port of its BBC News app. First up for the interactive treatment? F1 racing, starting with the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend. In the app viewers can access live coverage of the race, highlights from previous races, and multifeed coverage of the race including in-car cameras and driver trackers. There's a video demo and press release embedded after the break (viewable in the UK only), and the Sports app is expected to hit more devices before the Olympics starts, although it's unclear which ones.

Dow, S&P end lower for four days; jobs data a worry

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and the S&P 500 extended losses to a fourth day on Monday, as investors took their cues from last week's disappointing jobs report, which raised fresh concerns about the U.S. economy's recovery.

Despite Monday's declines, the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 ended above their session lows. But trading has been choppy in recent weeks, with a series of gains interrupted by a few days of losses.

Banks and industrials led the S&P 500's slide, with the S&P financial sector index and the S&P industrial sector index each down 1.6 percent. The two sectors are closely tied to the prospects for economic growth.

The latest jobs figures added to a series of weaker-than-expected indicators, which have taken the edge off a strong multi-month rally.

The CBOE Volatility Index or VIX jumped 12.63 percent on Monday to end at 18.81. The VIX is up about 21.4 percent so far in April.

"We're coming off a period of very high optimism, which is often problematic even when the fundamental news isn't disappointing," said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist of Key Private Bank in Cleveland, Ohio.

"The jobs report is a cautionary note that we haven't seen the last of disappointing news, suggesting there is probably a good stiff correction in our future, one tougher than an average correction."

Stocks have rallied sharply in recent months, with the S&P 500 climbing nearly 30 percent from its early October closing low to end at nearly a four-year high a week ago.

Volume was extremely light, with about 5.52 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq, well below last year's daily average of 7.84 billion.

The S&P 500 slid on Monday to a session low at 1,378.24, its lowest point in more than three weeks. But the benchmark index recovered some of that lost ground in afternoon trading and held well above its 50-day moving average near 1,371.

In addition to the U.S. jobs figures released last week, China's surprisingly soft producer prices data sparked concerns about waning demand in the world's second-largest economy. The country's March PPI data reinforced expectations that a cooling economy has eclipsed inflation as the Chinese government's biggest near-term worry.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 130.55 points, or 1.00 percent, to end at 12,929.59. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index slid 15.88 points, or 1.14 percent, to 1,382.20. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 33.42 points, or 1.08 percent, to close at 3,047.08.

U.S. non-farm payrolls added 120,000 jobs in March, far below the forecast gain of 203,000 jobs, according to Labor Department data released on Friday, a market holiday. The U.S. unemployment rate slipped to 8.2 percent in March from February's 8.3 percent.

The payrolls report cast doubts on the United States' ability to help bolster the global economy as Europe's debt crisis resurfaces and worries remain whether China's economy will avoid a hard landing. But at the same time, it renewed hopes for more monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

AOL surged 43.3 percent to close at $26.40, touching a lifetime high of $27.47 earlier in the session after the Internet company said it would sell more than 800 of its patents and related applications to Microsoft, and grant Microsoft a non-exclusive license to patents it retains for slightly over $1 billion in cash.

Microsoft, a Dow component, lost 1.3 percent to $31.10.

Following last week's modest losses, the S&P 500's key near-term support levels were 1,375 to 1,380, which were its resistance levels in late February, said Scott Davies, an analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co in New York.

Earnings will come to the fore this week, with bellwethers Google Inc and JPMorgan Chase & Co scheduled to report results. Alcoa will be the first Dow component to report results, with earnings due after Tuesday's closing bell.

Molina Healthcare Inc shares plunged 26.7 percent to $25.65 after the health insurer said its Medicaid contract in Ohio would not be renewed.

Is Windows Phone 8 popping up on a WP7 App?

Image
The "I'm a WP7" app is now showing records of both Windows Phone 8 Apollo (build 8.0.9662.0) and Windows 8 Desktop Jupiter (6.2.8288.0) emulators. It seems to tie in with rumors that software testing for the mobile OS was ramped up on March 30th in anticipation for release later this year. WP8 will bring a host of long-desired features to its battle with Android and iOS, including multiple screen resolutions, dual-core CPUs, NFC and microSD support. Now we can start wildly speculating on which Greco-Roman God / Battlestar Galactica character will lend its name to future software builds.

Business Consultant's Digest April 9th, 2012 | arc mercury

by Derek Greer

As a business consulting firm we focus on small businesses, startups and the middle class entrepreneur.? Knowing the value of time, here we share news items that we believe have the deepest impact on small business.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Make Social Networks Work for Your Start-Up: Social networks can be used for marketing or even as an alternative to a company website. But jump in only when your business is fully functioning since effectively managing profiles takes time and energy.
  • Re-Sizing Small Businesses: Lawmakers, banks and the Small Business Administration are expanding definitions of small businesses to include more companies once considered midsize.
  • U.S. Firms Emerge Stronger: Big U.S. companies have emerged from the deepest recession since World War II more productive, more profitable, flush with cash and less burdened by debt.
  • Romney?s Path Is Getting Clearer: The fight for the GOP nomination appeared closer to an end as Gingrich all but conceded to Romney, and Santorum faced a money shortage in his home state.
  • Share prices have defied skeptics this year, registering strong gains even as analysts have been reducing estimates for first-quarter earnings. That raises the prospect of a jolt to investors as the corporate reporting season begins.

As a business consultant in the 21st century it is?imperative?that we analyse the effectiveness of social network marketing. ?It is definitely the hot new thing, providing easy access to lots of consumers for a quarter of the price of traditional advertising. ?This may seem like a no-brainer to the startup community, however, the devil is in the details, which can be uncovered through asking these two specific questions.

> How much time and management actual goes into effectively administering a social network for marketing purposes?

> What is the actual return on investment- time / resources invested versus actual customers in return?

This is a metric often used for traditional advertising, yet for some reason it is often overlooked when it comes to social network marketing. ?This is something to keep in mind as the majority of us spend multiple hours a day facebooking, tweeting, linking-in, ect.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Job Slowdown Renews Doubt-?U.S. job creation slowed, as a labor market that recently has showed vigor appeared to lose momentum. The data have political implications and raise questions about Fed policy.
  • Stocks mostly edged lower, capping the biggest weekly drop of the year, as the Dow industrials declined 14.61 points to 13060.14.
  • The improving economy is providing a slight boost to U.S. malls and shopping centers, which registered their first declines in vacancies in years.
  • Microsoft is courting app developers for its Windows Phone to try to dent the dominance of Apple and Google in the smartphone market.
  • Venture Firms Offer More Than Cash-?Some of the biggest names in venture capital are starting to provide start-ups with more than just capital, offering marketing, design and other services that companies typically need help with in their early stages.
  • Bid to Ease the Squeeze on Business-?San Francisco has for at least two decades been a difficult place to set up and operate a small business, but the city is trying to simplify the process, especially for restaurants.

The question of the day: is the U.S. economy recovering? ?Well according to the recent jobs report, no. ?New jobs created (nonfarm) for March were 120,000, coming in under 200,000 for the first time since November of last year according to the labor department. ?However, on a more positive note, US malls and shopping centers are registering their first decline in vacancies in years. ?A good indicator that the economy is returning it?s buying power. ?As for the entrepreneurs and start-ups out there, venture capital firms are beginning to come to the party with more than just cash. ?They are attempting to offer more hands on services that will help companies take off.

As a business consulting firm we focus on small businesses, startups and the middle class entrepreneur.? Knowing the value of time, here we share news items that we believe have the deepest impact on small business.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Fears that central banks may soon end efforts to support financial markets and fresh concerns about Europe drove down stock markets around the world.
  • Private employers hired 209,000 workers last month, an ADP report said, stirring hopes for the government?s jobs report due on Friday.
  • The New York Fed said it will explore sales of some of its remaining securities from the bailout of insurer AIG during the financial crisis.
  • Regions Financial repaid the U.S. Treasury $3.5 billion, allowing it to emerge from the federal government?s bailout program.
  • U.S. trade restrictions could hamper the ability of American businesses to reap the fruits of Russia?s entry into the WTO this summer.
  • Last month, the SBA redefined small architectural firms as those with less than $7 million in revenue, from $4.5 million. The SBA has made similar upward revisions over the last year in 130 industries, adding at least 27,400 new companies to its definition of a small business.

Outside of the usual?rhythm,?stocks up then down, Fed in then out, something of interest for the ?small business? sector: the recent revision of what a small architectural firm is. ?As noted above from the WSJ, the SBA (US Small Business Administration) redefined small architectural firms to mean ?firms as those with less than $7 million in revenue, from $4.5 million.? ?What does this mean from a business consultant?s frame of mind? ?Well for starters this increases the number of companies within the architectural industry that are considered small business, therefore increasing competition. ?For architects, government contracts can be very lucrative, more importantly, very consistent. ?23% of government contracts must go to ?small businesses.? ?This now gives lager companies access to this allocation of business. ?This does not only apply to?architectural?firms, this increase of what is considered a small business is a trend that has been affecting many industries. ?Ultimately, this may also affect how small businesses within various industries are treated in regards to future legislation and tax.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Romney Wins Wisconsin, D.C., Maryland- Romney cruised to victories in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia, adding to his widening delegate lead over the rest of the Republican presidential field.
  • The sharp rise in gasoline prices has fueled consumers? thirst for small and fuel-efficient vehicles, a prime factor in driving light car and truck sales in the U.S. nearly 13% higher in March from a year earlier.
  • The Federal Reserve is in no hurry to launch new measures to boost economic growth, minutes from its latest policy meeting showed.
  • Stocks fell as investors eager for more stimulus were disappointed, with the Dow industrials dropping 0.5%. Treasurys were hit hard.
  • Climbing rents for apartments are combining with the drop in home prices to push once-reluctant home buyers into taking the plunge.
  • A year after banking regulators began cracking down on alleged foreclosure abuses, borrowers still haven?t received any compensation.
  • Crowd Control-What does a crowd-funding company look like? Here?s a peek inside the San Francisco offices of Indiegogo.com, a fast-growing Web-based fund-raising platform. Under a bill that?s expected to be signed into law this week, it will be able to extend its platform to start-ups looking to sell equity stakes in their businesses online.

Gas prices are still shooting through the roof, causing more Americans to buy new fuel efficient vehicles, an effect that is helping manufacturers pick up momentum. ?Apartment rents are increasing while home prices are dropping, giving some people the final push to buy instead of rent. ?These two trends are rarely inverse as they are now, therefore, this drastically tips the rent or buy decision towards buy. ?The Federal Reserve is not making any sudden moves to boost the economy, a sign that could be interpreted as positive, given that an economy without the need for training wheels is more stable.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • U.S. manufacturing picked up steam in March as a broad cross-section of industries reported rising output and strong orders for coming months. American consumers are helping offset softer demand affecting factories in other parts of the world.
  • Dire figures on unemployment and manufacturing activity in the euro zone?s weakest members dimmed hopes for the bloc?s growth prospects.
  • Stocks rose to multiyear highs in the first session of the new quarter, with the Dow industrials gaining 52.45 points, or 0.4%, to 13264.49.
  • A shakeout in the storefront-loan business may make credit even tighter for millions of borrowers with less-than-stellar credit histories.
  • Employees, Measure Yourselves-Encouraging workers to keep track of what they?re doing can make them healthier and more productive. New tools are making it easier for them to do that.

US Manufacturing is making a comeback, bringing the Dow up 52.45 points. ?Lets hope this momentum continues and brings us closer to recovery rather than just create another spike in the charts. ?The euro zone is still struggling which could sneak up again and slow down US momentum, however, with good ole fashion American consumerism making a comeback, the US continues to weather the storm. ?Credit is still tight for some would be borrowers, but Americans saved a few dollars over the last 3-4 years easing the effects of this continued credit crunch.

Facebook Buys Instagram For $1 Billion

Facebook has just agreed to a staggering $1 billion acquisition of Instagram - the popular mobile photo editing and sharing site - according to reports.

Twitter exploded with people marveling at the astronomical sale price, joking about hipster filters, and comparing previous photo site acquisitions.

The big question on everyone's minds is why. For Facebook, the short answer is because they can, and it's all about staying current. Instagram is in.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom insisted that "Instagram is not going away."

Selena Gomez on Instagram

Instagram lets users stylize photos, such as this one of Selena Gomez, on the go.

"We'll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network," Systrom said. "We will continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience for users."

The app will remain in the App Store and on Google Play and users will still be able to share on social networks other than Facebook, he said.

Elsewhere, another 10-figure tech sale was in the works. Rumors surrounding AOL's desire to sell off its patent portfolio have floated for weeks.

Monday, those rumors turned into a very real $1.056B deal with Microsoft.
