Why RedBuilt?? | RedBuilt Blog

By Tom Byron, Technical Sales Representative at RedBuilt?

Tom Byron, Technical Sales Representative at RedBuilt

Why use RedBuilt? products and services? This question is asked everyday by a variety of design professionals, contractors, property owners, and building department officials. This two part series will help explain the benefits of using RedBuilt engineered wood products. Part one is aimed at the design professionals and building departments. These individuals understand that commercial buildings are inherently different from residential buildings and must be designed and built to guarantee public safety. Next week?s part two will focus on how using RedBuilt products benefits contractors and building owners.

The construction business has been going through some major shifts in types of buildings being constructed; an example would be the now popular mixed use buildings. Mixed use buildings require a thorough understanding of building code requirements as a result of the combination of different uses, fire rating requirements, etc.

The turbulent times of the past few years have resulted in many building component manufacturers and construction firms either going out of business or drastically reducing their size. Due to the scarcity of projects in this economy, many contractors and suppliers have started to bid projects outside of their areas of expertise as a means for survival.? Unfortunately, they often times ?win? these projects as a result of their inexperience.

Invariably, this leads to challenges on the jobsite including attempts to mitigate costs by substituting products, changing details during construction, etc.. so how can you ensure a building is built to perform the way it was designed? How do architects, engineers and building departments protect themselves and the general public?

It?s Simple: Specify RedBuilt products and services and hold to your specification.????????????????????????????????????

As the industry leader in the commercial engineered wood products business, RedBuilt has been setting the industry standard since our founders first developed the Red Open-Web trusses, I-joists (Red-I? I-joists), and laminated veneer lumber (RedLam? LVL). Not only do we have the largest selection of engineered wood products to meet the needs of the commercial construction industry, but we also provide more engineering and technical assistance than any other company in the business.

So how does this help the AOR, EOR and Building Departments?

The most important advantage in specifying and insisting on the use of RedBuilt products is safety. RedBuilt is a company built on safety, service, and engineering. We take the word ?engineered? so seriously that we employ over ten professional licensed engineers in varying roles from production engineering, corporate engineering, operations, and marketing. In addition to working to ensure our products are used properly in your buildings, their duties also include product quality assurance at our four manufacturing plants, product testing, code approvals, training, and new product development.

We have five RedBuilt Design Centers (shop drawing department) strategically located at our manufacturing facilities and corporate headquarters.? Each Design Center is directed by a licensed professional engineer.? When required, our engineers review, approve and seal shop drawings as well as RedBuilt product load calculations. ?Since they are employees of RedBuilt, you know they have laser focus and understanding of our products and are incredible resources for solving, and perhaps more importantly, preventing issues on the jobsite.

Engaging our technical representatives during the design phase to optimize systems and requiring shop drawings to be reviewed and sealed by a professional engineer employed by the manufacturer allows AOR and EOR to focus on overall building envelope design and load development. Building Inspectors know that if RedBuilt products are supplied, the actual manufacturer is checking the design to make certain their products are being used in the correct application.

RedBuilt will provide free design assistance by our Technical Sales Representatives. We will visit your office at any time to help with a design or provide a lunch and learn training session to refresh your knowledge of our products. You can also use our on-line design manual and software at http://www.redbuilt.com/?or speak directly with our engineers.

Technical Representatives are also a resource for jobsite support.? We can stop by each jobsite to answer any questions the contractor may have. During this visit, the RedBuilt representative will walk the jobsite and review the installation of RedBuilt products. You, as a design professional, can have in your specification a requirement for the manufacturer to do this review. This piece-of-mind is a primary reason National Account Chains require RedBuilt to be used on their projects.

So, what do other manufacturers and suppliers do?

Most other manufacturers do not employ licensed professional engineers to review shop drawings, designs, or how a product substitution will perform. Instead, they rely on brokers and lumberyard sales people to redesign your projects. Since these manufacturers have smaller product lines than RedBuilt, and products that, in many cases, do not meet or exceed the specified products, they will need to make substantial changes to find a solution that ?works.? They may substitute lesser products, increase depth or change on center-spacing to get a product that they think will work. They then expect the EOR/AOR to approve their solution with little understanding of why the original solution was used.? This causes delays and additional check time for the AOR/EOR.

If a broker is supplying material, that?s all they?ll do, supply material.? They cut costs by eliminating seals on shop drawings.? Instead, they simply do a layout plan on top of the EOR?s structural drawings and pay to have the calculations stamped, which typically means that the output, based on input by others, is correct?not very reassuring. It doesn?t mean that the data was checked or any of the connection details were checked. In other words the entire burden is on the EOR/AOR.

Lumberyards attempt to convert the specified commercial products to a residential product line they carry. Often, residential products have different chord and web thickness, which raises a few questions: Does your nailing still work? Is the deflection still adequate? Does the end reaction require web stiffeners?

We are now seeing a push by residential manufacturers to get their products specified on commercial projects. When there is a mix of residential and commercial products on a project, sales people feel they have more flexibility to make product substitutions. They try to replace the commercial products so they can sell the whole project. This means no shop drawings, no application validation, and no responsibility for what is being supplied.

There are also many contractors who build custom homes or multifamily projects that think they can just substitute products as they wish. Since each lumberyard sells a different manufacturer?s product line and they have always swapped those out before, why not do the same on a commercial project? If there aren?t any shop drawings required then often the EOR doesn?t even know a project he designed is being built to different standards.

Competitors will also swap out hardware without checking nailing requirements. RedBuilt uses Simpson hardware to ensure the connections work as detailed and we know Simpson keeps all code approvals up to date.

So, what can you do?

Seven Steps Architects, Engineers and Building Departments can take to ensure your intentions and designs are being followed and your buildings are safe.

  1. Require the manufacturer to have a professional engineer seal both the shop ???? drawings and the calculations they submit.
  2. Require jobsite reviews and a verification letter by the product manufacturer.
  3. Require substituted products to be equal to or exceed specified products design ???? properties.
  4. Require only commercial products on commercial buildings.
  5. Require compensation for the design professional for time spent reviewing product ???? substitutions.
  6. Require professional engineer sealed shop drawings and load calculations for the ?as built? drawings to be submitted to building departments.
  7. Specify RedBuilt. The only company manufacturing for over 50 years in the ???? Engineered Wood Business.

Rough sea-slug sex may have benefits

The bizarre mating behavior of hermaphroditic sea slugs ? which involves stabbing penile appendages and hook-like penis spines ? may have hidden benefits despite its wear on the body, new research finds.

Sea slugs that mate more than the absolute minimum necessary to retain female fertility are more fecund than slugs that mate less often, according to the study detailed Wednesday in the open-access journal PLoS ONE. The findings suggest that there are benefits to mating more than strictly necessary, even when the mating comes at a cost.

The brightly colored sea slug Siphopteron quadrispinosum is hermaphroditic, meaning that individuals have both female and male genitalia. When mating, the slug playing the role of the "male" will stab its partner with a syringelike penile appendage and inject prostate fluids into the body. The sea slug penis also comes equipped with four to five large hooks on its base and 20 to 30 tiny spines on its tip, which anchor it into the female reproductive system.

Updated 66 minutes ago 8/24/2012 3:30:15 AM +00:00 Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Pliny the Elder is retweeting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii, just as it happened 1,933 years ago.

    2. King Richard III's grave may be under parking lot
    3. Cows get candy instead of corn
    4. Gibbons on helium trill like humans

Given all these pointy bits, sea slug sex can do a number on the receptive partner (in about half of matings, one slug takes the male and one the female role; in the other half, both simultaneously fertilize one another). But these slugs take on the female sexual role once or twice a day, researchers from the University of Tuebingen in Germany noticed, far more than necessary to keep the female system in working order. [ Marine Marvels: Spectacular Photos of Sea Creatures ]

To find out why, the researchers collected S. quadrispinosum from Lizard Island off of Queensland, Australia, and divided them into groups of four. Some of these groups were put together and given the opportunity to mate once every three days, less frequently than they mate in the wild. Another group was given one mating opportunity per day, about their natural rate. Finally, the third batch of slugs were given three mating opportunities a day.

The researchers then counted the resulting slug eggs. They found that the moderate-mating group was the most fecund of all three. Mating less decreased egg count by 23 percent. Mating more often decreased egg count by 10 percent.

It's possible that the once-every-three-days group just didn't have enough stimulation or sperm to reach their reproductive potential, the researchers wrote. On the other hand, the slugs that mated three times a day may have been overwhelmed by their sex-related injuries and thus had fewer resources to produce offspring. Or perhaps sea slugs given lots of chances to mate redirected their resources to producing sperm, rather than eggs.

The fact that moderate maters did best suggests that sea slugs try to balance the costs of their rough sex lives with whatever benefits come from mating more frequently. Multiple doses of sperm could allow the receiving partner to be choosy about which sperm fertilize the eggs, for example. Or sea slugs receiving sperm from multiple partners might be able to fertilize multiple-daddy batches of eggs, making it more likely that some offspring will survive no matter the conditions.

Burmanet ? International Business Times: Myanmar Rohingya ...

London-based Burma Campaign UK has slammed pro-democracy activists in Myanmar for failing the Rohingya, ?the world?s most persecuted minority? according to the UN, by not speaking out on their behalf.

The activists are keeping quiet for fear of losing support ahead of 2015 elections, says the campaign, despite mounting reports of mass killings, mass graves, torture and concentration camps.

?Pro-democracy activists in Burma have been largely silent about the recent crisis ? but some have actively jumped on the popular tide of racism and even suggested Rohingya be deported,? Burma Campaign UK?s director Mark Farmaner told IBTimes UK.

According to Maung Zarni, visiting fellow at LSE?s Civil Society and Human Security Research Unit, the pro-democracy opposition is actually ?a big part of the obstacle to resolving the Rohingya crisis peacefully and amicably?.

The National League for Democracy (NLD) and its leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi, who spent nearly two decades in jail and under house arrest, earned worldwide praise for their refusal to kneel before the military junta and for their steady criticism of human rights abuses inside the country.

But Aung San Suu Kyi has dodged questions about the Rohingya situation during her visit to Europe and has not spoken out on it yet.

Diplomats and human rights groups have grown increasingly concerned by her silence.

?She is no longer a political dissident trying to stick to her principles. She?s a politician and her eyes are fixed on the prize, which is the 2015 majority Buddhist vote,? Zarni told The Independent.

Racist pro-democracy leaders

As far as the NLD?s senior leaders and co-founders are concerned, they are ?racist to their cores? according to Zarni. Journalist U Win Tin, among those of ?Generation 88? (named after the year the pro-democracy activists banded together) who founded the party, even advocated the idea of interring the Rohingya, as the US did with Japanese people resident in the States during World War II.

?What is shocking to me as a Burmese is that these dissidents have failed to internalise humanism and human rights ideas, despite the fact that they have been barking human rights for the past 25 years,? said Zarni.

Aung San Suu Kyi called for a ?revolution of the spirit? a quarter of a century ago, but ?nothing spiritually progressive has taken root in the popular Burmese psyche?, Zarni continued.

Prejudice against Rohingya is so endemic ?that anyone speaking out for Rohingya rights faces abuse and condemnation?, Burma Campaign UK said.

?With critical elections due in 2015, activists may fear losing support if they speak out,? Farmaner agreed.? He added that this prejudice needs to be challenged but that will not happen until ?pro-democracy leaders start taking a moral stance and showing principled leadership?.

Racism is so widespread in Myanmar that it is considered socially acceptable.

?Racism exists not just against Rohingya but against and between various ethnicities in Burma as well as against foreigners. There is also widespread anti-Muslim prejudice.?

The current resurgence of racism is a direct result of a half-century of despotic military rule, according to Zardi.

Crimes against humanity

Representatives from the military members of parliament attend the opening of a joint parliament session in Naypyitaw

UK-based human rights organisations and scholars have called on the international community to delay lifting sanctions against Myanmar until a solution to the persecution of Rohingya is found.

The allegations of ethnic cleansing raised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) are serious enough to charge the Burmese leadership on grounds of ?crimes against humanity? before the UN, according to Zarni.

?The West should second the OIC?s attempt to put the Rohingya ethnic cleansing ? or partial attempts by the Burmese government ? on the UN?s agenda in the General Assembly,? he said. ?There is strong enough evidence to charge the Burmese leadership.?

The Rohingya have never been granted citizenship in Myanmar and a 1982 law excluded them from the list of officially recognised minorities.

Sectarian tension between Rakhine state?s 800,000 Rohingya and their Arakanese Buddhist neighbours exploded in June after allegations that a gang of Rohingya men had raped an Arakanese woman. The Muslims were lynched in response, sparking days of rioting.

However, many challenge this version of the facts, claiming the government?s media ?were whipping up the stories of the Rohingya as a threat to national security and Buddhism society?.

People shout slogans against the massacre of the Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar (Reuters)

According to Zarni, the military regime ?had a hand? in the outbreak of ethno-religious violence in western Burma.

?One rationale is that the regime has decided to resort to this ethno-religious mobilisation of the Buddhist masses as a way of shoring up its dwindling popularity vis-a-vis the growing and active popular support for Aung San Suu Kyi, at least domestically,? Zarni said.

One estimate reports that 90 people have been killed and more than 100,000 displaced during the conflict but HRW said this figure was grossly underestimated.

?There is a major humanitarian and human rights crisis taking place in Rakhine state and it isn?t getting the international attention it should,? Farmaner said.

It is widely believed within the Islamic community that the Myanmar government has acquiesced in or even actively supported the recent violence against the Rohingya.

?The Rohingya have faced severe human rights abuses at the hands of security forces for many decades and these have escalated in the current crisis,? confirmed Farmaner. ?Burma Campaign UK has received reports of rape, executions, torture and looting by security forces against Rohingya.?

Since the 1970s, the military regime has attempted to drive out or otherwise severely restrict the Rohingya in western Burma, Zarni claimed.

?This is the first time the Rohingya persecution has caught the world?s attention,? he said.

?The resultant pressure and policy priority by the Organisation of Islamic Countries has ? for the moment ? forced the generals in Naypyidaw [the capital] to play nice with the Rohingyas in Burma.?

California Bill To Ban Certain Hunting With Dogs Moves Forward

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) ? California would ban the use of dogs to hunt bears and bobcats under a bill approved by the State Assembly.

Proponents of SB1221 said dogs chase the animals until they are exhausted and climb trees, holding them until the hunter arrives.

The author, Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu of Torrance, has likened the practice to ?shooting a bear at a zoo.?

The bill passed 44-29 on a party-line vote Wednesday after a lengthy debate. Republican lawmakers representing rural areas said the bill is an attack on Californians? right to hunt, while Democratic lawmakers called the practice inhumane and unsportsmanlike.

The legislation arose after a California fish and game commissioner used dogs to legally hunt and kill a mountain lion in Idaho. It moves back to the Senate for concurrence.

Tony Nicklinson dies after losing 'right to die' legal battleOCEAN Style

Locked-in syndrome sufferer dies at home days after failing to win assurance that doctor could help him end his life

Tony Nicklinson, who failed in his high court bid to be allowed to end his life with the help of a doctor, has died just six days later, his lawyers said. He had been refusing food since the verdict, but contracted pneumonia and "went downhill quickly", they said.

Wiltshire police said they were not involved and it is believed the death was from natural causes.

In a brief statement, Bindmans LLP said Nicklinson, from Melksham, Trowbridge, died on Wednesday morning at home.

"This is to notify you of the sad death of Tony Nicklinson at approximately 10am this morning," the law firm said.

It also asked for the family's privacy to be respected.

Nicklinson's despair following last week's ruling was evident to all, as he broke into sobs that shook his paralysed body. He and his wife said they would appeal. "I believe the legal team are prepared to go all the way, but it means yet another period of physical discomfort and mental anguish for me," he said via a computer which he controlled through his eye movements.

In a statement at the time issued through his lawyers he said: "I am saddened that the law wants to condemn me to a life of increasing indignity and misery."

Although the judge acknowledged that his case and that of another paralysed man, known as Martin, were deeply moving, he said it was for parliament and not the courts to decide if the law should be changed.

Nicklinson, 58, was paralysed from the neck down after a stroke seven years ago. He wanted assurances from the court that anybody who helped him end his life would be free from prosecution.

A message posted from Nicklinson's Twitter account by his family on Wednesday said: "You may already know, my Dad died peacefully this morning of natural causes. He was 58. Before he died, he asked us to tweet: 'Goodbye world, the time has come, I had some fun.' Thank you for your support over the years. We would appreciate some privacy at this difficult time. Love, Jane, Lauren and Beth."

His wife, Jane, tweeted: "I have lost the love of my life but he suffers no more."

His daughter Beth added: "RIP @TonyNicklinson. Couldn't have asked for a better dad, so strong. You are now at peace, we will be fine. I love you xxx."
